Ramadan is a holy occasion observed in Qatar.  The month-long feast is celebrated with colourful activities and competitions all over the region. Here is a compilation to make this year’s Ramadan experience a memorable one.

Qatar Foundation

Qatar Foundation (QF) is set to host a range of activities for the wider community during the holy month of Ramadan at various locations throughout Education City.

Al Utrujah Holy Qur’an Contest

As part of the annual event, Qur’anic Botanic Garden will host the AlUtrujah Holy Qur’an contest for school students below the age of 12. The contest, held in collaboration with Education City Mosque, aims to encourage primary school students to study the Holy Qur’an. The contest also highlights the Qur’anic verses and stories that feature botanical terms.

Iftar Programme at Education City Mosque

Education City Mosque will hold an Iftar programme throughout Ramadan, providing 1,000 meals to members of the wider community. In the spirit of good faith, members of the public are encouraged to volunteer their time to pack and distribute the meals. Those interested in volunteering should email their name, contact details, and a suitable day and time they are able to volunteer to communitydevelopment@qf.org.qa 

Sports Activities

Throughout the month, QF will also host a range of sporting events, including adult swimming classes, artistic gymnastics, mixed martial arts for children, a women’s volleyball tournament, and a men’s badminton competition. 

Garangao

QF will celebrate Garangao on June 1 at the AL SHAQAB Indoor Arena. The event will feature a range of activities hosted by QF and its various entities.

MIA Ramadan Activities 2018

Each night for the first two weeks of Ramadan (16-29 May), MIA will be offering a wide selection of activities for the whole family – from lectures and poetry recitals for adults, to the MIA Bazaar and walk-in craft activities for children and families.

Talks & Lectures

All lectures will be in Arabic and English. Take the opportunity to come and learn more about Ramadan from a wide variety of speakers including MIA Curators, QU and QFIS professors and members of Qatar institutions and communities. Translation will be provided for lectures only. Events begin at 9 pm

  • Thursday 17 May – Dr Mounia Chekab Abudaya – Representations of Mecca and Medina in the collection of MIA
  • Friday 18 May – Dr Fetih Ahmed – Mosques as Social Institutions (This lecture will begin at 10 pm)
  • Saturday 19 May – Nasser Al Hajri – The History of Marriage in the Islamic World
  • Sunday 20 May – Khalifa Al Said – Ramadan in the Past
  • Monday 21 May – Dr Fetih Ahmed – Ramadan and Community Development (This lecture will begin at 10 pm)
  • Tuesday 22 May – Poetry Evening with the Mauritanian Community
  • Saturday 26 May – Dr Moein Sadek – (Title to be confirmed)
  • Sunday 27 May – Dr Tara Desjardins – Feasting in Islamic Art

Family Activities & Garangao

We aim to make your visit to MIA during the holy month as special as possible Why not come and participate in one of the following activities:

  • Make Ramadan-themed crafts with family such as mosque lamps, moon and stars
  • Listen to storytelling sessions with our library team
  • Take one of our special Ramadan themed guided tours
  • Borrow one of our new Ramadan Family Backpacks and explore the galleries together?
  • There’s something going on every night from 8:30 pm – 10:30 pm.
  • Ramadan celebrations will finish with our Garangao event on Monday 28 May 2018. Join MIA for an evening of activities, storytelling and of course, traditional gift giving all in the beautiful setting on the MIA.

MIA Bazaar

Join us for a magical Iftar in the MIA Park. During Ramadan, MIA Bazaar will open on will open from 7 pm – Midnight selling foods and handicrafts for all the family from over 100 different stalls.

Katara organises night market this Ramadan offering a wide variety of products from handicrafts to organic foods.

Qur’an Memorization Competition

Katara Cultural Village is inviting entries to its annual Holy Q’uran memorisation competition for children. Online registration will close on Saturday, 12 May. The contest will be held on 20 to 31 May, during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Interested candidates may register through the official homepage of Katara (katara.net).

4th Edition Katara Beach Volleyball Championship
The Cultural Village Foundation organises the 4th Edition of Katara Beach Volleyball Championship, to be held at the Katara beach during the holy month of Ramadan. Registration starts from 9-1 May 2018. The tournament is open for males only, 18 years old and above. Click here for more information.

Aspire Zone

Ramadan Sports Aspire

Ramadan has its special atmosphere everywhere, and Aspire is no difference. For the 7th year in a row, “Ramadan Sports Festival” is running at Aspire Zone’s various venues from Monday, 21 May, until Saturday, 2 June, to pull a large number of participants and partners. All competitions will be held from 9:30 pm until midnight.

    A unique event for ladies with different fitness classes, like aerobics, step and stretching.
