To mark Qatar’s National Environment Day, the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (DBES) at Qatar University – College of Arts and Sciences (QU-CAS) recently held the ‘Plants around us’ event last 26 February.

Around 33 students from various primary and independent and private schools in Qatar attended the event, together with members of CAS faculty, students and staff. DBES Head Dr Mohammed Al Safran was also there to grace the event.

The event featured a wide range of activities organised by Qatar Foundation’s Qur’anic Botanic Garden (QF-QBG) and the Agriculture Research Department of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME). Participants were given a brief background on plants mentioned in The Holy Quran. It also showcases Qatar’s numerous herbs used for medication, plants seen in the Qatari desert and many others.

According to Dr Mohammed Al Safran, Qatar has been keen to celebrate the National Environment Day since 1997 with the aim of raising community awareness on environmental issues.

The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Qatar University – College of Arts and Sciences hosts the event annually which demonstrates QU’s interest in the environment and its commitment to engage faculty and students in spreading awareness about the importance of preserving the environment.
