The Italian Navy FREMM (European Multi-Mission Frigate) Carabiniere is visiting Doha from 27 April until 1 May 2017. After the port visits in Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malesia, Pakistan, Oman, Kuwait and Bahrain ITS Carabiniere is now at Qatar’s Hamad Port.

The Ambassador of Italy to Qatar, HE Pasquale Salzano, and Commanding Officer of the ITS Carabiniere, Commander Francesco Pagnotta, in addition to representatives from DRASS, MDBA, Leonardo, and Fletironica held a press conference on board talking about the ship and her South-East Asia and Australia naval campaign.

ITS Carabiniere is an anti-submarine warship that was delivered to the Italian Navy in April 2015, as the fourth FREMM of 10 to be commissioned. ITS Carabiniere is fitted with a latest generation platform and combat systems based on state-of-the-art military and civil standards.

ITS Carabiniere’s deployment is aimed to strengthen the on-going cooperation activities with some transregional allies and develop relations with potential partners. Main themes of the naval campaign is thus maritime safety and surveillance, cooperation strengthening and naval diplomacy.

The South-East Asia and Australia naval campaign, started from Italy on 20 December 2016, and reflects an international vision that converges and outlines this century as the ‘blue one’. The ‘blue growth’ is considered a key factor for sustainable development of countries where the sea is a key resource for growth, employment and scientific and technological advance.

The deployment has been organised with the support of Fincantieri (lead sponsor), Leonardo, MBDA Italia, Elettronica, Telespazio and Drass.

Leonardo on-board the FREMM Frigate Carabiniere

Leonardo is part of the campaign to promote the ‘Multi-Mission European Frigate’ (FREMM), Carabiniere, which departed from La Spezia in Italy on 20 December 2016. The Carabiniere will be at sea for close to four months. Leonardo will promote its various Naval Solutions, which are fielded on the frigate itself and other solutions, which could be of interest in these regions. These cutting- edge capabilities are derived from over 50 years of experience in the design and implementation of Naval mission systems and through managing large and complex programmes.

The Carabiniere Frigate, which is an Anti-Submarine Warfare unit, is equipped with systems designed, produced and integrated by Leonardo. These systems include the Combat Management System (CMS), Radar Sensors and Fire control systems, Electro-optical and Infrared Sensors for tracking functions, Communications Systems and Defence Systems. The Frigate also has on-board the NH90 NFH multi-role helicopter with specific avionics and mission equipment for naval operations produced by Leonardo.
