When you drive the Porsche Macan – or just gaze at its gorgeous lines – you realise it’s a sports car in a compact SUV’s body. There are four different engines (each trim has its own powertrain), ranging from the 252-horsepower turbo-four base engine to the 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 powering the Macan Turbo. Each engine has acceleration that matches or exceeds almost every class rival, and the high-end Turbo trim will go from zero to 60 mph in under 4.5 seconds. All engines are mated to a smooth-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission, known as the PDK.
Every Macan model, including the entry-level model, will impress you with its luxury, its stylish, handsome interior and excellent material quality and craftsmanship. Drivers will appreciate the good visibility in all directions and with all five seats in use, there’s plenty of room for several shopping or carry-on bags. The Porsche Communication Management interface headlines the Macan’s standard features. It includes a wonderfully smooth seven-inch touch screen to handle all your information and navigation needs, two USB ports and Apple CarPlay.
Driving the base-level Macan is a joy. It’s fast as well as functional and a delight to drive either in town, on busy streets, or on the open highway. Initially the plethora of switches and screens may seem intimidating, but actually they are logical and an an ergonomic triumph. Quite quickly, the large touchscreen navigation and audio systems become intuitive. Porsche instrumentation is the best! It’s such a restful car to drive, the steering is light and the compact Macan is very easy to manoeuvre. Sitting inside, with its ideal driving position and all-round visibility, you really feel you could be in a much larger car and you begin to realise – not exactly unexpected, coming from Porsche – the Macan has an impeccable build quality; the car’s construction is one of its standout features.
If you want a compact luxury SUV with Porsche’s renowned performance, the Macan is the little brother to the Cayenne that you’ve been waiting for…
There is such a mountain of technical information and achievements to talk about, but the best way to continue this voyage of discovery is to talk to the professional staff at the Porsche Centre at The Pearl-Qatar. There, after a test drive, you will not only know it, but you will feel it. And there’s a good chance, like me, you’ll be converted.

EXTERIOR The Macan’s silhouette and proportions are unmistakably Porsche; instantly recognisable, the face alone shows its hereditary sports genes. Characteristic headlights and large imposing air intakes that are just waiting to breathe in life itself. The side profile is typically Porsche, with the distinctive sloping roof line and every muscle appears to be flexed – like a predator ready to pounce. At the rear, the classic Porsche sports car design reveals itself: slender at the top, widening into broad shoulders above the rear wheels – a homage to the 911, the most successful sports car in the world, ever.
INTERIOR You don’t just sit in the Macan, the ergonomic architecture integrates you into the vehicle. In typical Macan fashion, the sporty front seats give you a sense of height above the road without any loss of intimacy with it. Thanks to the ascending centre console – a typical feature of all real sports cars – you don’t have far to reach from the steering wheel to the PDK gear selector and other important vehicle functions. A glimpse into the past is the three-spoke steering wheel inspired by the design of the famous 918 Spyder and the future is welcomed by the same wheels’ multi-function capability and the versatility of the multi-function smooth-as-silk touch screen interface – a joy to use!
SAFETY/SECURITY There are so many advanced technical systems employed on the Macan that a good piece of advice to offer all those who are interested is to read the book (not a brochure!) available at the showroom. You can be sure that every system – suspension, chassis, cabin and power delivery – is engineered to enhance performance and driver satisfaction, and at the same time to strengthen the active and passive safety capabilities of an awesome driving machine.
