Jaidah Group – one of the most influential and successful conglomerates operating in Qatar – has announced the winners of its ‘SeeMyDoha’ mobile photography competition at an awards and exhibition event at the Katara Art Center in Doha.
Present at the event were HE Dr Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Minister for Culture, Arts and Heritage for Qatar who led other dignitaries and VIPs at the ribbon cutting ceremony of the exhibition, Mohamad Jaidah, Group Executive Director of Jaidah Group and representatives from Katara Cultural Village and Qatar Tourism Authority.
Awarded the grand prize of an unforgettable surprise trip to a mystery destination worth up to QR15,000, including air fares, accommodation, and expenses, was Ghada Ali Al Khater for the entry entitled ‘For every path taken, there is a path untaken’. Rounding up the first to fourth runners-up were the images sent by Hassan Anass Laoui entitled ‘black and white sea’, Lubaib Gazir for the entry ‘The Qatari Kid’, Aisha Al Misned for ‘Solstice solace’ and Muhamad Kamaluddin for the entry ‘Tranquility among the crowd’.
Hassan Anass Laoui received a Samsung Galaxy Camera as 1st runner-up; Lubaib Gazir received a complementary session at one of the many photography workshops in Doha as 2nd runner-up; and Aisha Al Misned and Muhamad Kamaluddin each received a trip around Doha with a microcopter or a helicopter as 3rd and 4th runners-up respectively.
The photos of the top five winners, along with the other finalists, will be on display at the Katara Art Center until 1 February 2014.
The distinguished panel of expert judges led by Mohamed Jaidah; Johan Madarasz, Creative Director Madcats; Marianne Hope, founder and manager of SeeMyCity; Yvonne Bouman, a freelance photographer and manager of Instagramers Holland; Herbert Schröer, a renowned mobile photographer from The Netherlands; Dirk Bakker, an iPhoneographer and SeeMyCity member from Amsterdam; Jeroen Moor, an iPhoneographer and freelance photographer from Rotterdam, Holland; and Tim Hatton, an iPhoneographer from the UK. Jaidah said:
This edition of Jaidah Group’s annual photography competition was definitely more competitive than we expected it to be…Apart from the record number of tens of thousands of entries throughout the duration of the contest, the quality of the images that were entered in the competition was simply amazing. More importantly, such fantastic images taken by extremely talented people clearly depicted the beauty of this nation. Surely our goal at Jaidah Group of showcasing the culture and magnificence of Qatar to the rest of the world, and unearthing and further developing local talent within has been achieved…Thus, on behalf of the entire Jaidah Group, I wish to congratulate all participants, finalists and winners, as well as the organisers and judges for a job excellently done.’
The ‘SeeMyDoha’ photography competition is an offshoot of ‘SeeMyCity’ concept which focused on the use of camera-enabled smartphones and the social media platform Instagram. Having been adopted by Jaidah Group as the way forward to what is now its annual photography contest, this edition of the competition commenced on the 7 April 2013, and closed on the 30th September 2013. Forming part of Jaidah Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme and its commitment to Qatari society, the aim of the competition is to discover the talents of residents in Qatar who possess an extraordinary gift with the camera, as well as to enhance the artistic make-up of the country by providing a platform for photographers from all levels.
Out of tens of thousands of entries, three winners each month were selected from April through September. These winners then qualified for the top prizes of the SeeMyDoha awards. The monthly themes for the competition included: Black and White for April; Details for May; People for June; Architecture for July; Colors for August; and Open theme for September.
