Reach Out to Asia’s (ROTA) Brand Ambassador Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulla Al Thani will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro along with 12 volunteers to raise funds towards ROTA’s projects in Palestine.
The ambitious charity expedition, which is called Elevate to Educate, will start on 2 October 2014. The climbers will travel to Tanzania to climb Mt Kilimanjaro (5,895 metres), encouraging friends and family to sponsor this leap to collectively raise QR1 million for ROTA.
On his JustGiving blog, Sheikh Mohammed said:
It is now my goal to take this passionate team of charity-trekkers to dizzying new heights and ensure that a future generation of Palestinians is not lost. Education is a fundamental ingredient of hope, yet in the throes of conflict a shockingly small amount of global humanitarian aid is earmarked for education. We will be working closely with ROTA, a Qatar-based charity aiming to improve access to relevant and high-quality education in poor and war-torn countries, as part of our seven-day assault to the top of the Tanzanian peak.
Sheikh Mohammed is the first Qatari to climb Mount Everest – the highest point in the world, reaching an altitude of 8,850 m – in May and June 2013 to raise US$1 million (QR3,641,300) for ROTA’s education projects in Nepal.
For Sheikh Mohammed, mountaineering is both a passion and profession. In September 2011, he summited Mont Blanc at 4,810 mts. He also climbed twice the summits of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 mts on March 2010 and on November 2011, respectively. Similarly, in December 2012, he reached the top of Mount Vinson, the highest peak of Antarctica, at an altitude of 4,892 mts, on August 28th 2012, he reached Mount Elbrus the highest point in Europe at 5,642 mts. On October 2012, he summited Mount Kosciuszko, Australia at 2,228 m and on 5 January 2013, he reached the summit of Mount Aconcagua (South America), the highest peak in the Western hemisphere at an altitude of 6,960 m.
The 12 volunteers joining Sheikh Mohammed on the climb include Raed Zidan, Asma Al Thani, Mohammed Fakhro, Bader Madani and Masoud Kalafchi. The seven-day expedition will conclude on 12 October 2014.
