Ramadan is a holy occasion in Qatar. This month-long tradition is observed and celebrated with colourful activities and events all over the region.
While this year’s Ramadan is expectedly low-key compared to previous years because of COVID-19, government institutions and private companies are pushing through with online and virtual events to celebrate the holy month.

Cultural Village Foundation (Katara)
Katara is launching a series of virtual events and competitions via social media that are open to both Qatari nationals and residents. Their biggest competition, which runs during the entire Ramadan, is the Katara Prize for Arabic Poetry, an initiative of the Qatari Women’s Pen Forum. The top three winners will receive QAR60,000, QAR40,000 and QAR20,000, respectively.

Behind an Object, There is a Story is the leading educational programme for schools and young participants initiated by FBQ Museum. The title itself evokes Hakawati, the traditional art of storytelling, explored through artefacts on display.

Mall of Qatar is proud to receive the holy month of Ramadan with a fascinating theme and programmes that add great value to customer and visitor experience.
The mall is decorated with innovative and unique crystal decoration, which reflects the essence of the holy month.
Social media contest
Mall of Qatar is giving its social media followers a chance to win a special Iftar from one of their leading restaurants with special home delivery when they join and win the mall’s weekly competition. Everyone can participate in the competition by simply following the mall on social media and answering the weekly question.
Ramadan delights with new recipes
The mall will post new and innovative recipes on their social media pages from a wide selection of international, local, eastern, and western cuisines presented by local and international chefs. The recipes are easy to follow and can help homemakers set up a special table filled with diverse dishes.
For maintaining agility and a healthy lifestyle, the mall is posting a range of health guidelines to be followed during fasting and after breaking the fast.
There will be regular posts and educational information on the holy month of Ramadan, the principles of fasting, and its spiritual goals, which improve the culture of fasting among young and adults.
Museum of Islamic Art
To mark the holy month of Ramadan, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) has kicked off its annual Ramadan programme with art workshops and family activities.
Art Workshops (12 to 14 May)
Community members can join a Calligraphy course in Nasta’liq starting from 13 May, from 10 am to 12 pm. For members looking for evening classes after Iftar, a three-day Clay Art workshop for adults will also be held from 12 to 14 May, 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm. On 13 and 14 May, another workshop will also be delivered by Qatari photographer Abdulla Al Mannai. This workshop will focus on the importance of light in portrait and landscape photography.

The Holy Quran in Many Languages
The MIA Library is hosting a new exhibition dedicated to the Holy Quran, featuring various displays of historic and contemporary copies of Surat al-Baqarah, Verse 183-187 from the Quran in different languages. The exhibition is open until 31 July.
In partnership with the International Artists of Doha (IAD), a non-profit group of Doha-based artists, MIA is hosting one artist every evening to create pieces of art in the atrium under the theme ‘Light in Ramadan’. Visitors are invited to come and observe the process and engage with the artists to find out about their inspiration and style.
Family activities (7 to 15 May)
MIA is organising evenings of engaging drop-in family activities, including a Ramadan Treasure Trail, Card and Bookmark making, Cut Out Ka’ba, Prayer mat paper weaving and lantern making. All activities are scheduled from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.
Ramadan-themed tours will be available for MIA visitors every Monday and Thursday evening, 9:30 pm. General tours of the Permanent Galleries are also open on Saturdays and Tuesdays at the same time.
Qatar Foundation is organising a series of virtual activities this holy month of Ramadan that is focused on healthy living, education, scientific knowledge, and Islamic culture. Members of the community are invited to participate in these online events intended to help ensure the spirit of Ramadan remains alive among us despite COVID-19 restrictions, as they enable learning, reflection and growth.
Al-Saa’im Al-Sagheer 2021

This is an annual Ramadan activation that aims to educate children about the importance of the holy month of fasting, featuring Ramadan Roundup with Ilyas & Duck, a daily online animation mini-series to help guide kids through self-awareness and self-improvement during the month of Ramadan. Asmaa’ Allah Al Husana
12 April to 12 May
Organised by the Education City Mosque, this programme is designed to empower youth and community members by increasing their knowledge through learning one of Allah’s names each day. This knowledge is considered noble as the more we learn about Allah, the closer we get to Him. More details here.

Design Post-COVID Humanity: Taaruf, Taawun, Tarahum

The final part of an educational programme led by the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University. Qatar National Library
Visitors to Qatar National Library (QNL) will be able to engage in activities that highlight faith to mark the holy month. These events will provide opportunities for the community to prepare for Ramadan.
The Holy Kaaba Online Exhibition
This online exhibition features 50 carefully selected items, which offer insights into the history of the Kaaba, the stages of its construction, its architectural features and adornment, and its religious and spiritual significance.
These photos, works of art, books and manuscripts testify to the deep effect the Kaaba has had on visitors for centuries. Click here to visit the online exhibition.
Ramadan Storytime, Trivia for Young Adults and Poetry Writing for Children
QNL also offers a variety of storytimes, trivia and poetry-writing for children.
Starting on 14 April, the Library is holding a virtual Storytime every Monday and Wednesday for children to listen to stories and help them create their own stories.
On 15 April the Library is inviting young adults to join an online trivia contest via Microsoft Teams and the Kahoot! app. Participants will need to have two devices (computer and mobile phone) in order to join. The top three winners from each session will get a special prize from the Library.
A series of Poetry Writing for Young Adults throughout the month will focus on teaching youngsters how to write a simple poem on the theme of Ramadan, something that is worth sharing with friends and family.

Ramadan and Garangao Crafts for Families
The Library is also hosting a virtual decoration workshop to create fun crafts with easily available materials. The first session will focus on creating Ramadan-themed decorations and crafts. The second session will be dedicated to Garangao.
