This year UK has been invited as the Guest of Honour at the 24th Doha International Book Fair, taking placefrom 4 to 14 December 2013, as part of the ongoing Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture.

The Publishers Association, the Qatar Ministry of Culture, UK Trade and Investment and the British Council are supporting four UK editors to travel to Qatar as part of a UK delegation to meet with members of the Arab publishing and literary scene to further their understanding of the market and build relationships for future cooperation.

The value of UK book exports to Qatar in 2012 was £4.67 m (QR27.46 m), an increase of 20.9% on 2011.

The UK delegation at the Doha International Book Fair will be represented by:

The 200 sqm UK stand is being designed with four areas and one of these is for the ‘British Culture & Education’ exhibition.

The Publishers Association – the leading trade organisation serving book, journal, audio and electronic publishers in the UK – is offering members exhibition space free of charge, but each participating company will be required to contribute £850 (QR5,000) towards the production and printing of an exhibition catalogue listing the titles bibliographic information, and the cost of shipping up to 50 kgs of books for each company from the UK to Doha. After the fair, the books will be donated to the National Library.

Qatar UK 2013 is a year-long cultural exchange programme between Qatar and UK, aiming to strengthen bilateral relations by creating lasting partnerships between institutions and individuals. Mutual recognition, understanding and appreciation of Qatari and British cultures are cultivated through over 70 entertaining and educational events throughout the year in both nations. Qatar UK 2013 is coordinated by Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) and the British Council with the support of Platinum Sponsors Qatargas, Qatar Shell and Vodafone Qatar.
