The updated Volkswagen Touareg now in the Q-Auto showroom on Salwa Road proudly shows off its refreshed styling and new technology.

The impressively large yet lithe Touareg is well equipped for local driving conditions and obviously is a go-anywhere vehicle. In fact, the engineering modifications for the new Touareg have reduced a lot of weight and this ‘diet’ has greatly improved the driving performance and the handling, both on and off road.

Volkswagen Touareg Interior 2015After feasting your eyes on the gorgeous exterior lines, your senses are further excited when you see and enter the luxurious cabin. The aura of luxury hits you, touch and smell are heightened as you appreciate the stitching, the quality materials, the attractive instruments and dashboard, and large touchscreen presenting the information you need.

Within a minute my phone is Bluetooth connected and I am ready to go with my music collection.

Press the button to start the quiet but powerful engine and the side mirrors swing out; you immediately notice the impressive acceleration, with full torque available at quite low revs.

There is even a choice of driving styles: choose D for a quiet, stress-free mode or choose S for a more spirited gallop when the urge takes you.

VW is proud not just of the Touareg’s weight loss but also its much-improved dynamic composure, and it doesn’t take long behind the wheel to realise why. On the move, the Touareg feels nimble and agile in a way you wouldn’t expect from a vehicle as big as this.

As for the steering, it’s amazing how precise it feels. Here more than anywhere, VW’s engineers have surpassed themselves, somehow managing to provide the Touareg with light, crisp, accurate steering that allows you to place it on the road with much the same precision as you would a Golf. As an on-road off-roader, it’s hard to think of any rival, at any price, that is more convincing.

With all the quality engineering and safety built in by VW, the Touareg is fundamentally a safe car, and a surprisingly fun car, too.
