Full-size pickups used to be simple creatures with but one purpose, ie moving things. Their life cycles used to be long, equipment fairly basic and updates few and far between.
Not anymore. Nowadays, the pickup market has become as cut-throat as that of mid-size sedans, and Chevrolet is competing with the best of them.
So here, just two years into its current generation, is the refreshed and updated Chevrolet Silverado pickup for 2016.
The new and powerful front grille sports a galaxy of LED lights; in fact, the LTZ model has all LED exterior lights, including fog lights, taillights and indicator signals.
The Silverado was early to adopt 4G LTE connectivity, and now it sports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other technical features include available wireless phone charging, forward-collision alert, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams.
The spacious comfort in a high quality interior, with its contrasting double stitching, made driving the Z71 a pleasure. The all-round view is wonderful, the mirrors are large, there are lots of grab handles and plenty of convenient storage spaces and this was heightened by the new technology safety and infotainment electronic systems. I was most surprised to learn – to feel – how the lane change warning system alerted me to my drifting. It is through the seat and I felt tingles in my legs.
There is no problem with power. Absolutely not. Engine choices are a 285 hp, 4.3 litre V-6 with 305 lb-ft of torque; next up is a 5.3 litre V-8 and, at the top of the range, a 6.2 litre V-8 pumping out 420 horsepower and bringing a 12,000-pound maximum towing capacity. GM’s eight-speed automatic transmission is available on most models.
Driving a Silverado certainly makes a difference.

EXTERIOR A muscular front end, sculpted hood and signature LED lighting accents give Silverado a bold new look, while high-strength steel delivers rugged capability that you can depend on. This model features full LED lighting package including LED headlamps, daytime running lamps, foglamps, park/turn signal lamps and taillights
