Almost everything about this sixth generation icon was redesigned in the name of performance. You can see it in the lower, slimmer proportions and dramatic fastback profile. You can feel it in its agile road handling and the refined interior that always puts the driver first. And you can hear it in the growl of the 455 horsepower powerplant that brings to life the most powerful Camaro SS ever.
An all-new architecture helped Camaro lighten the load by over 100 kg compared to the fifth generation. The suspension was engineered to be 21% leaner, with aluminium suspension components that reduce unsprung mass and result in advantages like much better balanced handling.
Remarkably, Camaro has a chassis that’s also 28% stiffer than before, giving the driver an incredible connection to the road. That lighter, stiffer architecture provides the foundation for incredible handling, but Chevrolet wasn’t content to stop there. Electric Power Steering brings road feel and response to a higher plane. Up to four selectable drive modes offer distinct experiences. And the smaller, tighter proportions and quick steering ratios contribute to a nimble, controlled feeling with every turn of the wheel. And four-piston Brembo brakes – the type that is fitted to Formula 1 racing cars – bring it all to a controlled stop from any speed.
The performance of the new Camaro challenges many of the iconic muscle cars from the 1960s, while the Camaro SS’s performance – including 0.97 g cornering – makes it one of the most capable 2+2 coupés on the market today, and it certainly seems to have blown away the other competitors in the Qatari market. However, the performance numbers only tell half of the story, because the lighter kerb weight also makes the new Camaro feel more responsive and agile behind the wheel. It brakes more powerfully, dives into corners quicker, accelerates faster and is more fun to drive than ever.
Chevrolet promised Camaro DNA will never change. Conclusion: It’s all-new. Yet undeniably all Camaro.
