Three very different musical experiences are on offer at Katara at the start of the year – the tragedy and drama of the ancient world, the gay, swirling rhythms of Vienna during the nineteenth century, plus a twenty-first century Arab singer.
5 January: ‘Les Troyens’
Katara offers an opportunity to view the rarely performed Les Troyens, Berlioz’s vast epic opera, broadcast live in HD from the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. The opera, last performed at the Met in 2003, stars Deborah Voigt, Susan Graham, Bryan Hymel, and Dwayne Croft, portraying characters from the Trojan War. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi marshals the large-scale musical forces needed to do full justice to the auditory and visual spectacle.
6 January: ‘A Viennese New year’s Concert’ Johann Strauss II, ‘The Waltz King’
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra take you back to the glittering ballrooms of Vienna with an evening of music to make your feet tap. Johann Strauss II the most famous and enduringly successful of nineteenth-century light-music composers, was born in Vienna on 25 October 1825, the son of an equally successful father. He developed the classical Viennese Waltz to the point where it became as much a feature of the concert hall as the dance floor. With his abundantly tuneful waltzes, polkas, quadrilles and marches, Johann II captivated not only Vienna, but also the whole of Europe and America for more than half a century.
10 January Magida El Roumi in Concert
Internationally renowned Lebanese singer Magida El Roumi will perform a unique concert in Katara’s Amphitheatre, singing from her new album and a bouquet of her gold hits. For those unfamiliar with Arab music and would like to listen to some, this is a good place to start. Magida has a great voice and her songs are easy on the ear. Audience participation will be at an all time high and the atmosphere electric.
