One of Iraq’s most famous artists, Ala Bashir is also well known for being one of Saddam Hussein’s physicians, an experience he wrote a book about, called ‘The Insider: Trapped in Saddam’s Brutal Regime‘. Still working as a doctor, now as a plastic surgeon, he has exhibited his artwork all over the world and has won several prizes, including the Gold Medal in the Biennale International Exhibition in Baghdad in 1988, the second prize in the International Poster Exhibition in Paris in 1983 and Iraq’s highest State Award for Fine Art in 2003.

Katara is hosting an exhibition of his called ‘Memories of Chairs’ from 23rd of March to 14th of April, in Katara Gallery, Building 19. The opening is on Friday 23rd at 6pm.
