MAqam is performing a concert called ‘Around the Arab World in 80 Minutes’ on Wednesday 4th April at Katara Opera House, Building 16. Tickets cost QR100 and can be purchased here.

MAqam is an ensemble that performs Middle Eastern Music; formed in Vienna in 2006, they have since gone on to perform all over the world. The group performing this week includes Sub Principal Cellist Hassan Moataz, string players MAias Alyamani, Islam Nour Elhefnawy, Islam Abd Elaziz and Hosam Hagag, with George Oro on percussion.

Hassan Moataz will solo with the Philharmonic Orchestra in Marcel Khalifé Concerto for Rababa on Thursday 5th April. Tickets can be purchased here. Moataz plays the Egyptian rababa, a string instrument which is over a 1000 years old and sometimes has a spike at the bottom so it can rest on the ground. Despite its limited range – it has about one octave – it is noted for its unique sound, comparable to a human voice. Moataz played at Khalifé’s Rabada Concerto at the opening of the Katara Opera House on National Day 2010. The concert also includes Kristof Barati performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Michalis Economou conducting.
