The British Council is delighted to announce the finalists for the Study UK Alumni Awards 2020-21 in Qatar. For the third time, the awards are hosted at a national level to celebrate the achievements of alumni in Qatar.

The finalists were selected for their outstanding achievements as business professionals, entrepreneurs and community leaders, and for their important contribution to strengthening collaborative ties between the UK and Qatar.

Shortlisting of applications went through an internal and external judging process with the judging panel including prominent personalities in the country:

  • British Ambassador to the State of Qatar HE Jon Wilks
  • British Council Country Director Sam Ayton
  • iloveqatar.net Founder Khalifa Al Haroon
  • HBKU CHSS Founding DeanDr Amal Al Malki
  • Qatar-UK Alumni Network Board Member Dr Noora Al Fetais
  • Qatar British Business Forum Chairman Emad Turkman

The external moderation meeting was hosted virtually this year.

Award winners will be announced on 2 February. All applicants for the Qatar National Awards are independent of the global awards, which is run separately by the British Council.

This year’s finalists are:

  • Dr Marc Jones, PhD (Durham University graduate)
  • Professor Samer Ahmed (University of Cambridge graduate)
  • Ekram Ali Syed (London South Bank University graduate)
  • Hamad Alyafei (University of Derby graduate)

British Ambassador to Qatar, HE Jon Wilks, said he was impressed by the quality of this year’s applications and delighted to see the benefits of a UK education directly helping Qatar’s development in various sectors.

According to British Council Country Director Sam Ayton, the remarkable individuals selected as finalists for the Study UK Alumni Awards in Qatar have all taken their UK education as a starting point to excel in their chosen careers and to shape the world around them. She said that this year’s finalists are testimony not only to the diversity of UK alumni and their endeavours but also to the transformative impact of a UK education.

With more than 5,000 alumni of a UK education in Qatar, there is much to celebrate!
