The British Council Qatar is pleased to announce the launch of its Qatar Environment Champions Programme in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar and Qatar Green Building Council

The programme will support young activists in the country to implement projects that can create a greener, more sustainable world.

In line with the activities which just took place at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, UK recently, the Environment Champions programme will look to raise awareness and encourage Qatari society to do their part to tackle global warming.

Challenges and engagement

The programme brings together education institutions working with youth and civil society organisations that focus on environmental challenges and engage partnership support and endorsement from key government agencies.

The Climate Connection Champions programme has a specifically designed training element where youth participants will develop social leadership skills, skills to build and convene coalitions and support the development of sustainable plans for social action in climate change. It will empower young people in Qatar to take action on a local level that has lasting effects.

The programme is considered the starting point for social work and change. Led by a group of teachers to make a difference by combining passion and work for a better tomorrow, they will work towards encouraging innovative solutions in the field of sustainability, especially in regards to climate change through projects that will be presented. One of the expected outputs of the programme is the establishment of a network of national trainers equipped with the skills, knowledge and motivation to tackle climate action.

Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar Executive Director Neeshad Shafi said they are delighted to collaborate with the British Council and other partners for the Qatar Environment Champions initiative.

We hope to work together over the coming years to develop the youth into strong and talented leaders who will work both on awareness and providing solutions in our joint fight against climate change.
