Every 18 December, Qatar celebrates their National Day in commemoration of the historic day in 1878 when Sheikh Jassim, the founder of the State of Qatar, succeeded his father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Thani, as the ruler and led the country toward unity. National Day emphasises the Qatari identity and history, embodies the ideals and visionary aspirations that this country was founded on, and pays homage to the great men and women who participated in building the nation.

Here is how you can celebrate Qatar National Day 2014:
The Doha Corniche is the number one place to be during Qatar National Day. On 18 December, events at the Corniche begin at 7 am with a National Day Parade, in appearance of HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, The Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and other members of the Al Thani ruling family. The National Parade is broadcast live on all Qatar TV channels. The day continues with traditional exhibitions at the Corniche, followed by a spectacular 10-minute firework show in the evening. Throughout the National Day, people, both locals and expatriates, drive along the Doha Corniche to display their decorated cars to the audiences.

Darb El Saai
Setup annually specifically for Qatar National Day, the Darb El Saai culminates the National Day parade at the Doha Corniche. Members of the Al Thani ruling family make their appearance at Darb El Saai, following their participation at the Doha Corniche. Located at a temporary tent at Al Sadd, Darb El Saai begins the National Day celebrations at 8 am with traditional sword dances and songs. There are also fireworks at the evening to commemorate Qatar National Day.
However, Darb El Saai begins celebrating Qatar National Day opens to the public on the second week of December with horse and camel displays and games, traditional bedouin games and various stalls and booths offering both handicrafts and activities for the children, all organised by various government institutions.

Qatar Museums (QM) is hosting a number of unique and exciting events and activities at the historic Al-Zubarah World Heritage Site to celebrate Qatar’s culture and diverse heritage, starting this National Day. Presented by QM under the visionary guidance of its Chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, and in collaboration with Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA), the activities are suitable for all the family to enjoy, so don’t miss out!
Join in this celebratory event to mark Qatar’s National Day. Different community institutions will contribute through multiple performances and displays of Qatar’s heritage. These include:
- Al Arda performance, a traditional dance by Qatari men (sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Art and Heritage)
- Marine handicrafts, including splitting shellfish displays, netting and more (brought by the Doha Youth Centre)
- Marionette traditional crafts performance by Qatari artist Abdurrahman Al Mulla
- An exhibition showcasing traditional garments and gold jewellery, by Amel Al Ali
- Displays of local fish models from Qatar and the region (brought by the Ibrahim Bin Ali Centre)
There will also be the opportunity to dress up like Qataris and have your photograph taken in a traditional setting, wearing traditional Qatari clothing!

Another important destination on Qatar National Day is Souq Waqif. Being one of Qatar’s landmark cultural and historic destinations, the Souq will be overflow with cultural National Day celebrations and festivities including a variety of traditional sword dances, songs and other entertainment.

Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF) is welcoming visitors to a special tent at Darb El-Saai as part of the State of Qatar’s central National Day celebrations taking place over a period of almost two weeks.
From Monday 8 December until Saturday 20 December 2014, event highlights at the tent include a large number of interactive activities presented by QF’s various members and centres for young people. The activities are colour-coded to demonstrate the purpose of each activity. The activities at Qatar Foundation’s tent at Darb El-Saai include a reading corner for young people, introducing them to Qatari heritage in order to create a powerful bond with Qatar’s culture and history. QF member Al Shaqab will give special riding and grooming lessons as well as horse healthcare tips outside the tent in an interactive and educational setting. This activity will allow visitors to explore the world of horses, which is deeply rooted in Qatari heritage. To help children choose a career path that serves the nation’s development, the tent offers simplified class activities for them to learn about a variety of professions.
Throughout the National Day celebrations, QF Radio, Qatar Foundation’s in-house broadcast station, will provide children with the opportunity to play the role of a radio reporter and interview visitors. By simply interacting with the general public, this activity will boost children’s confidence and self-expression by conquering their own shyness and fear in order to unlock their potential. QF Radio will also be providing special coverage, featuring many exciting programmes and live broadcasts from the location of the celebrations on its Arabic channel on 93.7 FM and its English channel on 91.7 FM.

Associated Activities of Qatar National Day Celebrations 2014
The Qatar National Day Celebrations Organizing Committee, in association with Ministry of Interior, will be organising the ‘Associated Activities of Qatar National Day Celebrations 2014′ at Al Wakra, Industrial Area, Al Rayyan and Al Khor on 18 December 2014 from 8 am to 10 pm.
Indian and Sri Lankan community teams and students of Ideal, Pak Shama, Sri Lankan and and Scholars Schools will be showcasing their cultural and musical performances in Industrial Area at West End Park amphitheater, while the Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities along with the students of the PEC, Bangladesh School, Bhavansو Shanti Niketan and TNG will be hosted at Wakra Sports Club.
The Indonesian, Malaysian and Filipino community teams and the students of the Philippines School, Doha Philippines International School, Noble and Doha Modern Indian School will be hosted at Rayyan Sports Club’s indoor stadium, where they will be displaying their talents and skills in cultural and musical performances.
The traditional, cultural and folklore shows of the Nepalese community and Al Khor residential community teams and the performances of the MES Indian School, Bright Future, Birla, DPS-MIS and National KG will take place at Al Khor sports club.

The Public Parks Department has planted 500,000 flower seedlings to be used for the beautification of streets and parks in the run-up to Qatar National Day. The move is in response to the demand by municipalities for seasonal flowers in different types and colours. In addition, the step comes in preparation for National Day and to meet the demand for flowers during the winter season when there are many events and activities in different municipalities. More people visit parks during the winter and that’s why the Public Parks Department are keen to beautify them as well as roundabouts and street islands.
In addition, on the occasion of Qatar National Day 2014, the Ministry of Municipality & Urban Planning (MMUP) is opening four new gardens for public in Al Dafna, Umm Salal, Al Kharaitiyat and Al Shahaniya.
Note: Traffic police have announced strict rules on decorations of cars for the forthcoming Qatar National Day 2014 celebrations on 18 December. The new rules bans:
- Any posters on cars before the celebration days
- Full posters on the windshields which could disrupt motorists’ visibility
- Posters to cover number plates
- Change colour of vehicles
- Sitting or dancing on car windows, roofs, front or rear parts of their vehicles
- Stunt shows or blocking traffic on roads
Motorists inside of the car should be visible at all times (not hidden behind posters). Police will be on the roads to check cars that are over-decorated, or violate traffic and safety rules. Patrols will be deployed in all celebration venues to ensure smooth traffic and enforce rules.
