The calendar marks another new year on 12 February, the start of the Year of the Metal Ox according to the Chinese calendar. Similar to the celebrations to mark the start of the year on 1 January, this occasion is marked auspiciously by different traditions to bring in good fortune, wealth and longevity, which are also expressed in different types of food.
The year 2021 marks the Year of the Metal Ox with the last being in 1961. The Ox is the second of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Ox was about to be the first to arrive, but Rat tricked Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox. Thus, Ox became the second animal.
