The Media Centre for Fourth Civil Defence Exhibition and Conference opened on Monday 7 October 2013. The exhibition and conference is held in association with Al-Sharq newspaper during 11 to 13 October 2013.

A discussion forum was held on ‘Disasters and Crisis: Reasons & Remedies’. Director of Prevention Department at General Directorate of Civil Defence (GDCD) Brigadier Hamad Othman Al Duhaimi, Head of Media and Awareness Section at the Department Captain Jabir Mohammed Al Marri, Officer of Engineering Drawings at the Department Lieutenant Abdul Rahman Al Kaabi, Head of Media Section at United Ready-mix Mohammed Nasser participated in the forum.

The forum discussed disasters and crises and its prevention along with cooperation in disaster response within the three tire level – Gulf , Arab and regional.

The discussion was initiated by the Brigadier Al Duhaimi, who said:

The General Administration of Civil Defence is fully prepared to deal with any emergency or incident occurring within the state and control in less time as possible. Since we are nearing to start camping season I assure that the GDCD has a center in Sealine area and another one in ​​Mesaieed to ensure the safety of all the things that may cause accidents and fires in the tents, giving safety guidance for camping people to protect them from the risks that they may be exposed for.’

Brigadier Al Duhaimi urges campers to choose camping site carefully away from fireplace and electric generators and do not put LEDs or radioactive sources close to the tent cloth to avoid disaster. Although Qatar is outside earthquake belt, according to Brigadier Al Duhaimi, safety measures and precautions shall be taken by all to deal with any emergency situation.

Captain Al Marri stressed on the importance of awareness and education on safety procedures in building and construction pointing that the GDCD had held several programmes for individuals and companies on fire prevention system and its maintenance, common mistake that lead to non-working of the system, fire extinguishing system for buildings and controlling it in case of fire, etc. According to Captain Al Marri, electric sockets and connects shall be compliant with approved standards as the low qualities items are the main reason of electric short circuit accidents.

According to Lieutenant Abdul Rahman Al Kaabi, all building projects in the country is subject to pre-approved conditions and drawings and it will be inspected prevention department of the GDCD to confirm it compliance with approved standards. He added that all the newly-built are subject safety conditions that requires use of fire resistible materials to reduce spread of fire. In addition, Lieutenant Al Kaabi pointed out that most of the deaths causes by fire accidents recently was due suffocation which reminds the importance of ventilation in buildings whether it is natural or artificial. Stressing on the importance of fire detectors in buildings, Lieutenant Al Kaabi reminded the building owners on importance periodical maintenance of safety devices at the buildings specially cleaning the air vents on continuing basis, assuring that they are working properly.
