This summer is a great time to get off the couch, get crafty, and go outside to beautify your garden, no matter how small or big. Here’s a simple garden craft for those who love plants and don’t want to spend a lot of money on them this summer. So, try making your own garden planters with plastic bottles.

In addition to beautifying your garden and saving money, you’re also recycling. There are several ways one can reuse a plastic bottle. They make great planters in several ways. Here’s one of many ways you can make a hanging planter using a plastic bottle:

Materials:

  • Plastic bottle/bottles
  • Paint
  • Knife or scissors
  • A thin metal rod, thick thread or floral wire (to hang the planter)

Begin by removing the wrapper and then cut out the top of the bottle on a diagonal with a knife (Exacto knife is recommended). Then clean up any edges so that its tip is smooth.

Then begin painting the bottle. Use thick paint to properly cover and colour the bottle. You will probably need 2-3 coats to get good coverage. Drawing or design on the bottle as you wish.

Once the paint is dry, you are ready to plant. Start by poking a hole at the bottom of the bottle for drainage. Fill halfway with dirt and add your plant. Then poke two holes on each side on the top of the bottle. The holes should follow the line of the bottle (so one is higher than the other) rather than putting them side by side. Then lock the string through holes with knot at the top.

Finally, find a place to hang your new plastic bottle hanging planter. It can even be placed indoors.
