Cecile El Beleidi, Deputy Ambassador at the British Embassy, was the guest of honour at Doha College’s Year 12 Celebration Evening where students were honoured for their success in the (I)GCSE examinations taken in June 2014.
El Beleidi presented the students with their awards. She said:
I wish to congratulate each and every student who has helped achieve such wonderful results for Doha College. It is a pleasure to be here today to help celebrate this success and remind ourselves of the importance of education in young people’s lives. I wish the Doha College students all the best in your future studies and careers.’
Every year, Doha College celebrates the success of students who pass their (I)GCSE examinations, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, which is a two year course and is the world’s most popular international qualifications for 14 to 16-year-olds. The specialised English language curriculum prepares students for their higher education in A Levels.
Thushan Puhalendran, Year 12 student and winner of the Doha College Year 11 Academic Award 2014, said:
It’s all a bit bewildering, I didn’t realise I had achieved so much, it’s a great surprise. I am now studying for my AS levels and hope to look at a future in Maths and Economics. I have been at Doha College for 12 years and find the school and staff very supportive.
This year a magnificent 98% of students received five A*-C grade (I)GCSEs which is the minimum pass rate. Of this, 57% of students received five or more A*-As, a truly triumphant result that has beaten Doha College’s previous results. All students who passed these examinations were personally accredited at the awards ceremony held at Doha College.
Each student received their certificate on stage and speeches were made throughout the evening by members of staff and the current Head Boy and Head Girl. In addition, musical excellence was showcased by students at the event.
Senior Vice Principal, Teresa Woulfe, said:
I am very proud of every student who attended this event. Our students work exceptionally hard to achieve outstanding results. I’d also like to thank our teachers and parents who play a significant role in preparing students for external examinations.
Although the evening is designed to celebrate each and every student’s success, there are a number of students that get recognised for exceptional achievement. Each year the student who has excelled throughout the year and achieved exceptional grades within their (I)GCSEs is awarded the Doha College Year 11 Academic Award.
