Doha College Goes Green(er) for World Environment Day

Doha College World Environment Day

Doha College has recently marked World Environment Day with a multitude of eco-themed activities.

Apart from wearing green for the day, students adopted a positive mindset to think about everything in an environmentally-friendly way, from reducing electricity consumption in their classrooms and common spaces, to using renewable resources. Lessons also focused on the impact of human activities on the environment.

The college, who has been awarded official green flags for both Primary and Secondary schools, benefits from the actions of a permanent eco-committee. Their latest success is the agreement they reached with the school canteen in the West Bay campus.

As of last week, the canteen only uses paper and aluminium packaging for all food, no longer offers meals inclusive of water bottles, features a ‘Meatless Monday’, and has stopped offering single-use plastic cutlery. This is a massive step forward in reducing waste, and the committee will work towards extending this initiative to the remaining food outlets within the school.

Also as part of their eco drive, Doha College recently began a collaboration with ‘Superheroes Eat Plants’ and ‘RAW Middle East’, offering students and staff a vegan alternative. The plant-based meals are not just healthy for those who eat them; opting for vegan meals save an enormous amount of what goes into feeding the animals from which the meat originates, and in processing and transporting their meat. Each meal saves an astonishing 1,388 litres of water, 6 kg of grain, 0.9 sqm of forest, 3 kg of CO2, and one-third of an animal. The plant-based school café was so successful since its launch a few months ago, that ‘Superheroes Eat Plants’ has just opened a stall at the Doha College West Bay campus.

The students rounded up the World Environment Day with the sale of reusable produce bags from – bags made from recycled plastic bottles that are able to hold up to two kilogrammes of fruits and vegetables and weighs only 10 grams.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually every 5 June to encourage global awareness and action to protect the environment.
