Doha College has won the International Impact Award at the recent British International School of the Year awards beating competition from schools all over the world. This category is awarded to a school in recognition of the impact the school has made to education within its host country.

The Principal of Doha College Dr Steffen Sommer stated:

I am absolutely delighted for Doha College to receive this award in recognition of the impact the college has made on the environment in Qatar.’

‘Our pioneering Eco Club is led by teachers and chief Eco Warriors Naomi Capewell and Brian Kerr. These teachers and the Eco Club students have worked hard to introduce an ethos of reduce, reuse and recycle into our community, and the team’s efforts resulted in Doha College being the first school in the MENA region to receive a Green Flag under the Foundation for Environmental Education’s International programme.’

The Eco-Schools programme is delivered to 49,000 schools across 64 countries and is coordinated by the Denmark-based, Foundation for Environmental Education. The award was granted following a vigorous inspection which looked into all the sustainable initiatives being run by the school. To participate in the Eco-Schools programme, Doha College had to implement a seven step change process and empower students to lead these processes and actions. The Foundation inspects schools every second year to ensure these environmental practices are maintained.


The British International School Awards celebrate innovation in strategic, financial and educational projects in qualifying schools. They are organised by the British International Schools magazine with the support of ISC Research. Schools competed in ten categories against British International schools across the world.

Andrew Maiden, organiser and editor of the British International Schools magazine explained why the judges chose Doha College’s entry, said:

The judges were particularly taken with the project. The effects in its community and pupils made it a worthy winner. We were overwhelmed by the number and quality of the entries. Many highly regarded schools and their projects failed to make the shortlist. So, to win is a real accolade.’

This award is another accolade for Doha College who were recently acknowledged as a pioneer school in High Performance Learning. Established in 1980, Doha College is one of the oldest British curriculum schools in Qatar providing a world-class education for over 1900 students, between the ages of 3 and 18, who represent over 72 different nationalities.
