If you haven’t visited Shanghai Me Doha yet, it has been designed as a testimony to the beauty and refinement of Shanghai’s decadent history which it celebrates in both interior design and cuisine. It is chic, glamourous venue that consistently and expertly produces world class East Asian cuisine.

It’s easy to get to on the North Beach of West Bay with free valet parking and a gorgeous entry hall. The interior of Shanghai Me Doha has a refined and elegant ambiance littered with bold yet soothing colours and signature furniture. From the wallpaper to the crockery, every item has been expertly selected to elevate the design and comfort of this immaculate restaurant.

A restaurant can’t be elevated by décor alone, and what made the experience truly five-star was the staff. From the hostess and the waiters to the restaurant managers, everyone knew exactly what they were doing and were attentive, happy to help, and full of amazing recommendations! They truly made our visit to Shanghai Me special.

Another unique element of Shanghai Me is the cocktail and mocktail menu. It is traditional in Chinese culture that each year is depicted by an animal – for example 2023 will be the Year of the Rabbit. First you much use the chart at the beginning of the menu to discover what animal reflects your year of birth. Once you have discovered your animal sign, you can peruse the menu to discover which cocktail or mocktail the expert mixologists recommend for you!

And that brings us to the food. I still cannot believe that three courses of this superior cuisine were only QAR115. Each course was a delight to look at and taste. Any colleague or business partner will be certain to thoroughly enjoy their meal and be truly impressed with your choice of venue.

Business Lunch

To begin your business lunch, as is traditional with Chinese meals, the first course is an amazing selection of delicious soups. We decided to try the Hot & Sour Soup with Mushrooms and the Chicken & Sweetcorn Soup. While the Hot & Sour Soup was powerful and packed with salty and tangy flavours, the Chicken & Sweetcorn Soup was sweet and filed with soft, tender chunks of chicken.

After we finished our scrumptious soup, we dived into our appetisers. I decided to sample the Sesame Prawns on Toast, while my colleague tried the Wild Mushroom Dumplings. The Sesame Prawns were utterly divine – and clearly other diners thought the same as they began to appear on tables across the restaurant. The coating was warm and crisp, while the inside was soft and packed with spices and flavour. The Dumplings were served piping hot from a steaming bamboo basket and were utterly delicious as well.

The main course was what we had most been looking forward to – all the selections were mouth-watering. Eventually, we settled on the Beef Tenderloin with Egg Fried Rice and the Yuzu Mizo Silver Cod with Steamed Rice. I’m sure every dish would have been magnificent, but we were thrilled with our choices. The Beef Tenderloin was so soft and cooked to perfection. It was smothered in a barbeque glaze and served with an ample portion of egg fried rice. The Silver Cod was equally soft and tender, the flavour was much more refined and subtle. I would highly recommend either!

Marhaba Recommends

If you’re feeling particularly peckish – you can select a Bao Bun from their collection for just QAR40 or you can browse their Dim Sum Library. With food that had been so spectacular, we had to sample a Bao or two. We decided on the Peking Duck Bao with Cucumber and Hoisin Sauce, and the Angus Short Rib with Peanuts, Chilli and Coriander.

Dessert

Dessert at Shanghai Me Doha is nothing short of a spectacle: a feast for the eyes – and the tastebuds! For an additional QAR25 you can have a portion of Milky Cake or Scoops of Ice Cream or Sorbet. We have sampled both of these desserts on our previous visits to Shanghai Me Doha, and inspired by the incredible cuisine we had already sampled we decided to splash out and try the Japanese Cheese Cake and we had to try the Shanghai Me Giant Fortune Cookie.

The Japanese Cheese Cake was absolutely scrumptious – light and creamy cheesecake was drizzled with vanilla, caramel and berry drizzle. Now this sounds almost too decadent to be true – but trust me that all the flavours come together to make the perfect dessert.

Now the word decadent leads us to the Giant Fortune Cookie. Wow. All I can say is wow. We had never seen anything like it! The dessert came with a fortune for each of us, and was lathered in cool, hardened dark chocolate, and was filled with creamy matcha filling on one side, while the other was packed with creamy chocolate filling. It was utterly overly-indulgent but if you can’t be indulgent at Shanghai Me – where can you be?
