Qatar was the first country in the Gulf region to have a national library (Dar al-Kutub, in 1962) and the opening of its new national library in 2018 has been a major event in the cultural history of the region. This talk will cover the history and architecture of Qatar National Library, its core collections and services, and its special collections in the Heritage Library with particular emphasis on the outstanding collection of historical maps of Arabia and what we may learn from them.
About the Speaker:
Christopher Alario has been the Map Librarian/Curator at the Heritage Library of Qatar National Library since 2015. He worked at the Map Division of the New York Public Library and has an MLS from Queens College, CUNY and an MA in Islamic Studies from Yale University.
