Under the auspices of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Naser bin Khalifa Al Thani, the events conducted as part of observing the International Day Against Drug Abuse by Qatar, started at Landmark Mall on Thursday 19 June 2014.

This year’s theme is ‘Our children are our responsibility’. Organised as part of observing the day, The security exhibition was opened by the Director General of Public Security and Chairman of the Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs, Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim Al Khulaifi. The opening ceremony was attended by the Director General of Public Directorate of Customs Ahmad Ali Al Muhannadi, MoI departments directors and experts in Drug Abuse Prevention awareness programmes.

Staff Major General Al Khulaifi said that the observation of the 27th International Day Against Drugs on 26 June 2014, marks the desire of the world countries to fight against this dangerous evil that prevails in all sections of society. He said:

Qatar is keen to work with international society in their efforts to prevent this disastrous evil. The National Strategy has formed a clear roadmap features to combat the drug problem and the reduction of the supply and demand. The measures taken by many civil institutions and bodies for the implementation and effective application of the objectives of this strategy are worthy of praise and appreciation. The theme, ‘Our children are our responsibility’, would help to highlight the role of parents and their attention in raising awareness against drugs and alcohol.’

Several institutions from public and private sectors, including Drugs Prevention Department,  Coasts and Borders Security Department, Medical Services, Traffic Department, Preventive Security Department, Penal and Correctional Institutions Department, Qatar Police Federation, Ministry of Endowment and Islamic Affairs, Supreme Council of Health, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, General Directorate of Customs, Social Rehabilitation Centre, Qatar Centre for Voluntary Activities, Eid Charity, RAF take part in the exhibition events.

Captain Hamad Abdullah al Khatir, head of International Affairs Section of Drugs Prevention Department, Dr Abdullah Muhammad al Sharqi, specialist in psychiatry for Saudi Arabia also addressed the event.

Besides various events, scholars will present religious lectures from 23 to 26 June 2014 in association with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs.

Symposium on Misuse of Prescribed Medication

Meanwhile, under the patronage of Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim al Khulaifi, the Director General of Public Security, the Permanent Committee for Drugs and Alcohol Affairs organised a symposium on the ‘role of medical staff in preventing and reducing the misuse of prescribed medication’, in association with Hamad Medical Corporation. The workshop was addressed by Dr Yusuf Al MUsalmani, Medical Director of Hamad General Hospital, Dr Abdullah Muhammad Al Sharqi, Senior Consultant in Psychiatry and Addiction medicine From Saudi Arabia, Dr Muhammad Abdul Aleem Ibrahim, Sen. Consultant in Psychiatry at HMC, Dr Essam Hamid, Head of Department of Pharmacology and Drug Control of the Supreme Council of Health.
