Registrations have opened for Qatar’s leading corporate team building event – the fourth annual Maersk Oil & Qatar Petroleum (MOQP) Challenge, which tests competitors during five demanding stages over two days.

Managing Director of Maersk Oil Qatar, Lewis Affleck, said:

This year’s event will feature a new landscape, extra strategy components and more comfortable accommodation but it will be just as physically demanding as ever. I’m proud that competitors will once again raise money through registrations for one of Qatar’s greatest health challenges – diabetes. Through our support for Action on Diabetes and more broadly our social investment programme Action for Qatar, Maersk Oil Qatar is bringing meaningful benefits to the State of Qatar.’

For the first time, a total of 30 teams with five members each will compete in and around the Sealine Resort, where accommodation will also be provided.

This year’s challenge, which will be held on 14 and 15 November 2015, will include a greater focus on strategy and decision making to complement physical activities, including mountain biking and kayaking. The event will feature around 150 competitors from companies in a range of industry sectors, ranging from energy and professional services to higher education, health and automotive.

All money raised from registration fees will be donated to the Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA) through the Action on Diabetes (AoD) partnership and will be used to fund the 15th Al Bawasil Camp for children with diabetes. Executive Director of the QDA, Abdulla Al Hamaq, said:

Last year, the Al Bawasil camp hosted 65 children – our biggest number yet. The camp’s mission is to create a safe and loving environment for children with diabetes as well as to teach them how to take charge of their condition and avoid its complications in order to reach their full potential. The support from Maersk Oil Qatar, Qatar Petroleum and all the participants will ensure that we can help just as many children in the future.’

The Al Bawasil camp is held annually in Doha and attracts children with diabetes from seven regions of the International Diabetes Federation.

QP is a state-owned public corporation established by Emiri Decree No. 10 in 1974. It is responsible for all phases of the oil and gas industry in Qatar. The principal activities of QP, its subsidiaries and joint ventures are the exploration, production, local and international sale of crude oil, natural gas and gas liquids, liquefied natural gas, refined products, synthetic fuels, petrochemicals, fuel additives, fertilisers, steel and aluminium. The operations and activities of QP and its affiliates are conducted at various onshore locations, including Doha, Dukhan and the Mesaieed and Ras Laffan Industrial Cities, as well as offshore areas, including Halul Island, offshore production stations, drilling platforms and the North Field.

In partnership with QP, Maersk Oil Qatar operates one of the world’s most complex fields, offshore at Al Shaheen. It produces a third of Qatar’s oil. Turning marginal and challenging fields into successes has been the cornerstone of Maersk Oil’s growth since it began in 1962. This is particularly true in Qatar, where Maersk Oil took over the Al Shaheen field in the early 1990s at a time when others walked away. Maersk Oil has now recovered in excess of one billion barrels of oil from the field, which currently produces around 300,000 barrels of oil per day.
