Doha hosts on Monday 5 October, a preparatory meeting between the Undersecretaries of Tourism Ministries and Authorities in the Gulf Co-operation Council. The representatives will gather in preparation for a meeting between Tourism Ministers and Tourism Authority Chairpersons taking place on Wednesday 7 October.
The meeting will be opened by His Excellency Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) Chairman and will be chaired by Saif Al Kuwari, QTA’s Director of International Co-operation.
Mechanisms to boost intra-GCC tourism will feature on the meeting agenda which also includes a discussion on the removal of obstacles that hinder the development of Gulf countries’ tourism sectors. Delegates will explore ways to speed up the policy shaping and decision making processes and will discuss joint promotion of the Gulf, training programmes, and the development of a framework for tourism and aviation collaboration.
Al Kuwari said:
It is an honour for Qatar to host the first complete cycle of meetings between GCC tourism officials. The meetings have been a great opportunity to develop the common vision between GCC countries and to highlight the ways in which we can collaborate to achieve this vision, especially with respect to intra-GCC tourism. We look forward to moving ahead with solid, practical strategies to increase the attractiveness of the region as a destination on the global map.’
Al Kuwari added that the First Annual GCC Handicrafts Exhibition held under the theme ‘Woven with the Thread of Heritage’ will open its doors to the public on the sidelines of this meeting between 6–10 October. The idea for a joint annual exhibition was initially suggested during the first Ministerial meeting, held in Kuwait last year.
Following the meeting delegations will attend the departure of the dhow boat ‘Fath Al Kheir 2‘ from Katara Beach to India, on a historical journey that aims to preserve and perpetuate Gulf marine heritage.
