The second meeting of the global sports security experts held by Interpol Project Stadia in collaboration with the Security Committee of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) was recently held at Security Committee headquarters on Sunday 27 November.

Captain Ali Muhammed Al Ali, Assistant Director of the Security Department at SC welcomed the members and said:

Major sporting events are becoming ever more important at the present time where globalisation has unfolded extensively all across the world. The sports events will be an effective tool contributing to build up the image of the host countries and publicise it as well as prove their capabilities at the international level.’

‘The State of Qatar is utilising the opportunity to host the FIFA World Cup 2022 for the first time in Middle East and second in Asia to stimulate the process of social, economic and human development especially in the field of strengthening security experiences and exchanging global practices in the related areas. Qatar had historic experiences in hosting mega sports events whereas it hosted Gulf Cup in 1976, Youth football championship in 1995, Asian Games in 2006, Asia Cup Football in 2011 and World Handball championship in 2015.’

Qatar also stages more than 90 local and regional sports events every year as well whereas all events are organised with high expertise and proper security procedures.

During the past years Qatar has been working to enhance security experiences and learn from the experiences of hosting countries of world sports events. The security experts from Qatar made their presence to watch and monitor the World Cup 2014, Brazil and Euro Cup 2016.

Qatar has developed greatly in qualifying the security cadres in accordance with the utmost professional measures and in collaboration with global security agencies like Interpol.

Captain Falah Abdulla Al Dousari, Director General of Stadia project of the Interpol said:

That in order to make the international police capable to effectively confront the challenges of security, it is highly needed to diverse security expertise. It is highly encouraging to witness the participation of various continents, including the North America and South America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East, which will help to produce good results.’

Stadia project is a ten-year Interpol project funded by the State of Qatar to create a centre of excellence in policing and ensuring security of major events and support the project of the Supreme Committee in the context of preparations for hosting the FIFA 2022 World Cup.

He added:

All security efforts of the countries participating in the meeting is to ensure the security and safety of innocent people during the organisation of major events around the world. our goal is to develop recommendations and guidelines concerning the safety and security of major events.’

The three-day meeting will hold discussions on important topics such as planning for major sporting events, roles and responsibilities and structure of command and control.
