Thank goodness for the better weather in the evenings – we can finally
sit outside without sweating too much!

Speaking of which, we were invited to try the return of the popular Thursday barbecue night at the always-reliable Santa Monica Breakfast Club, located at the Grand Hyatt Doha Hotel & Villas.

If you have lived in Qatar for a while, chances are you will have been to SMBC’s impressive breakfast offering or the equally superb Friday brunch. Now there is another reason to visit (if you needed one), namely BBQ Night @ SMBC.

The premise is reassuringly simple – turn up at 7 pm, enjoy unlimited food from the grill and other accompanying dishes, with a choice of drinks package to wash it all down with. The barbecue night lasts until 10 pm, meaning three whole hours to relax and unwind with the family, have a romantic dinner for two, get in the party spirit with friends … whatever floats your boat!

The restaurant has been a runaway hit since its transformation a couple of years ago, and the outside area has similarly received a discreet makeover. It is all in keeping with the West Coast laid-back vibe, surrounded by the lush green landscaping of the hotel – and, importantly, it is conveniently close to all that delicious grilled food!

In fact, the first thing you notice when you walk in the restaurant is that irresistible aroma of the barbecue. While you are of course able to dine inside, head immediately outside for the ultimate experience. Spend a few moments at your table and breathe it all in…

However, we simply couldn’t resist taking a quick peek at the offerings (for research, naturally) and found ourselves pilling our plates high with salmon, ribeye steak, lamb chops, corn on the cob, and veggie kebabs. We urge you to sample SMBC’s homemade speciality sausages: absolutely delicious, and we had no guilt in going back for more. It was all so fresh, tasty, invitingly chargrilled to perfection.

We were so enchanted with this amazing fare that we almost forgot about the sides on offer, so it was a quick dash for me to load up on cowboy beans, mac and cheese, roast potatoes and cauliflower, while my dining partner in crime had quite the mound of luscious mashed potato with truffle and creamed spinach.

At the salad bar, do try the potato salad – it’s awesome – and there are bountiful fresh greens and other salads as well. For those with a sweet tooth, you can finish off this splendid feast with a selection of desserts, including fresh fruit, cheesecake and tiramisu.

What better way is there to start off the weekend? It’s no sweat, get yourself to the Santa Monica Breakfast Barbecue Club and find out!

BBQ Night at SMBC is every Thursday 7 pm – 10 pm. Prices are QAR220 pp (soft beverages), QAR320 pp (special beverages).
