Poised at the edge of the Arabian Gulf, the Hamad International Airport’s (HIA) tranquil waterside setting provides a perfect backdrop for its stylish architectural elements underpinned by leading edge technology. Two world-class runways, reputed to be among the longest in the world, a state of the art Air Traffic Control Tower, a passenger terminal with a capacity of 30 million passengers per year, over 25,000 sq m of retail and food and beverage facilities, a uniquely shaped public mosque.

– By 2011, up to 50,000 labor workers from national and international companies worked on HIA

– 41 contact gates, 130 check-in desks, three central utility plants and 29ha lagoon

– 47 contractors and 100 contracts

– 2,300,000 m(3) of concrete and 87,600 tonnes of crushed rock

– HIA will consist of a automated people mover (train), operating in continuous shuttle between the North Node and South Node stations 700 m away with an average speed of 20km/h and extensive glass for panoramic views (Coming in March)

– The cargo terminal covers an area of 50,000 m(2), accommodating 5,300 separate shipments

– The catering facility covers an area of 65,000 m(2), producing 90,000 meals per day

– The Air Traffic Control Tower is 90 m high, 75 m above ground, visible from central Doha

– The Emiri Terminal covers an area of 12,000 m(2)

– HIA will consist of a Public Art Program, showcasing artwork of 14 national and international acclaimed artists

The Hamad International Airport goes beyond the definition of a traditional airport.
Its luxurious ambiance is enhanced by resort quality facilities: plush hotels, spas, swimming pools and leisure options like a squash court allow passengers to relax, refresh and rejuvenate themselves in between flights.

It is one of the few public spaces where people can enjoy a museum experience. Hand-picked ancient and contemporary art is showcased in a brilliant architectural setting.

By the second half of the year, Hamad International Airport will welcome our national carrier Qatar Airways to its new home and…over 30 million passengers will be able to experience travelling through the world’s newest aviation hub.

From environment controlled terminal systems in the passenger terminals to advanced baggage handling processes and enhanced Air Traffic Control systems with inbuilt fail safe checks of location and identification of aircraft and vehicles on the airfield…the HIA is heavily invested in leading edge technology that catapults it into one of the most advanced airports in modern times.

Technology takes centre stage at the Cargo Terminal, the Catering Facility and at the Aircraft Maintenance Base to make these areas highly automated and state of the art.

The New Doha International Airport Steering Committee (NDIA SC) was formed by an Emiri Decree to plan, implement and oversee the construction of the new airport in coordination with the concerned authorities. The tasks of the NDIA Steering Committee include design, procurement, construction and all other activities necessary to achieve the construction of the airport and as a team, use their collective expertise, experience and skills to accomplish the project.

The current NDIA SC comprises the following members:

The airport is set to receive passenger flights of a dozen or more airlines as early as April 2013, while cargo operations are set to open by March. Doha International Airport (DIA) will remain open until Hamad International Airport becomes fully operational.
