Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) proudly hosted a joint workshop for researchers looking to publish their research in the HMC-sponsored Qatar Medical Journal (QMJ) at QScience.com, the online academic publishing platform of HBKU Press.

The workshop which took place on 15 March, marks the second community outreach event hosted by HBKU Press for the academic community in Qatar; the previous one held earlier this month in conjunction with the International Review of Law at Qatar University.

HBKU Press is committed to serving the community by hosting information sessions and academic workshops that help researchers in any field break into the publishing world.  ‘Community outreach is an integral part of what HBKU Press does,’ explains Saffiyah Al Nuaimi, Managing Editor of Qatar Medical Journal.

According to him, one of the goals of the publishing house is to have a platform where local researchers from the region be given an opportunity to contribute to the local and global academic research landscape. He said that QScience.com was developed under an open access model which allows authors to share their work freely, with higher access, download and sharing rates, while ensuring proper citation. The entire publishing process with HBKU Press is in line with international standards meant to keep the author and the author’s interests at the heart of the publishing process.

The workshop gave participants insight on the proper way to submit research articles to QMJ, how authors can promote their research and work, and the benefits of publishing with HBKU Press.

HMC Senior Consultant of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and Editor-in-Chief of Qatar Medical Journal Dr Mohammed Hammoudeh, said they encourage the HMC staff to submit their research manuscripts for publication in QMJ because, compared to traditional print journals, QMJ stands out because it is a free, indexed in PubMed Central, and accessible to anyone with an internet connection because it is hosted by HBKU Press as an open access publication. This means that articles published in the journal will be more easily read, cited and shared than other journals with subscription barriers.
