Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) celebrated the midway point of Ramadan, known as Qaranqao, with a variety of events for patients and their families across its network of hospitals. Qarangao or Garangao, is celebrated on the 14th day of Ramadan.

Members of the HMC Health Profession Awareness and Volunteering Programme, in cooperation with Qatar Charity, Al Aziziyah Youth Centre, and Vodafone Qatar held events earlier this week at the Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City for around one hundred patients and their families. The festivities included games and workshops for children.

Balqees Al Khazraji, Director of the programme, said that the Qaranqao celebrations are a time-honoured tradition that reinforces HMC’s mission of providing safe, compassionate care.

We recognise that many of our patients, particularly those who are hospitalised, may be unable to join in the Qaranqao celebrations, so each year we bring the festivities to them. From fun games of chance to the distribution of gifts and candy, planned events celebrate the spirit of sharing and giving.’

Qaranqao celebrations were also held at Al Wakra Hospital and at the Enaya Continuing Care Centre in Muaither, a community-based mental health centre opened by HMC in 2016. Aisha Al Khayarin, Director of Nursing at Enaya, said that around 70 patients attended the event. They were joined by families and members of the multi-disciplinary care team. Al Wakra Hospital staff, meanwhile, distributed gifts to patients and visitors as part of the celebrations, supported by Commercial Bank and Qatar Sports Club.

Qaranqao provides us with the opportunity to recognise our volunteers and staff and to partner with local organisations. These events allow us to celebrate together and help with integrating patients into the local community.’
