The Department of Medical Education at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently held an awarding ceremony to recognise the Excellence in Medical Education of learners, educators and administrators in the delivery and achievement of high-quality education.

The event saw over 100 awards in several categories which recognised the dedication and exceptional contribution of faculty members, and exceptional performance among learners and trainees in both postgraduate and undergraduate medical programmes, including continuing professional development (CPD) and simulation.

Dr Abdullatif Al-Khal

Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Director of Medical Education, Dr Abdullatif Al-Khal,  expressed his appreciation for everyone who contributes to medical education at HMC, adding that their pride, relentless commitment, and passion for the profession is evident through their exceptional contribution and performance.

Dr Al-Khal said they are proud that HMC’s medical education programmes consistently meet the highest standards of international training standards, and this is important for the next generation of healthcare practitioners as well as their future patients.

Because of the quality of our training and education programmes, we are able to attract some of the best and brightest medical graduates both local and international.

To achieve this high standard, Dr Al-Khal added that they depend on excellent educators who bring out the best in those they mentor through well-rounded, academic and practical educational programmes in an environment conducive to learning.

It is their contributions that will help us prepare our future highly competent medical workforce in keeping with our national health strategy.

Rigorous international standards

As an ACGME-I accredited institution and a key academic partner for several local health professions education programmes, HMC’s medical, dental and other health professions training programmes must meet rigorous international standards, offer a robust and safe clinical learning environment, and ensure health professions students and trainees have access to all the resources they need to succeed and become clinical leaders of the future.

A special category of awards, the Director’s Special Awards, was also given out to recognise the long service and contributions made to support medical education across the corporation.

The annual recognition event was held at the Itqan Clinical Simulation and Innovation Center, and attended by distinguished leaders and colleagues from across HMC.

HMC is the first healthcare system in the region to achieve prestigious institutional accreditation by ACGME International LLC. To date, 18 of HMC’s medical residency training programmes and 11 fellowships have successfully achieved ACGME International LLC programme accreditation. In addition, HMC is also accredited by the Joint Commission International as an Academic Medical Center.
