Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Hamad Dental Center recently celebrated the succcess of young Qatari dentists after completing the requirements to be enrolled in the Post Graduate Dental Education fellowship specialty programme developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Dentistry of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

The programme, the first of its kind in Qatar, saw the 21 Qatari dentists take the Membership of the College (MFD Part 1 and 2) as an entrance exam in October 2016.

Professor Johann De Vries, Dental Director and CEO of Hamad Dental Center, and Chairman of the Hamad Dental Service, said:

The agreement between HMC and RCSI represents the first time RCSI has affiliated with any healthcare organisation in the Middle East to provide an internationally accredited dentistry fellowship program of the highest caliber, with the aim of offering specialised dentistry training for Qataris interested in furthering their education and advancing their dental qualifications to internationally recognised standards.’

RCSI’s internationally accredited Pediatric Dentistry Fellowship Program presents Qatari clinicians with the opportunity to pursue a selective graduate education locally, without the requirement of travelling abroad. More importantly, clinicians will have earned accreditation from a globally respected institution.

Dr Jamal Al Abdullah, Senior Consultant, Divisional Chief and Unit Head of Pedodontics, Hamad Dental Service, said:

Parts 1 and 2 of the Membership of the College examination were recently administered in Qatar for the very first time in October 2016. The pass rate of our doctors (clinical associates) for the stringent exams was extremely high and exceeded the average pass rate of their counterparts in the region.’

Dr Al Abdullah added:

This specialised training offers Qatari dentists an amazing opportunity to expand their expertise and develop their professional careers. I am personally thrilled that this programme has a special emphasis on promoting a holistic approach towards paediatric dental health. This is an area that is extremely important for our population in Qatar, where the oral health needs of our children need particular attention.’

The collaboration between RCSI and HMC requires faculty members from the Hamad Dental Center to engage in extensive training to support and facilitate the management and operational goals of the newly accredited dental fellowship training programme. The highly competitive programme selects four fellows annually. Priority is given to Qatari citizens with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited dental school recognised by HMC.

Clinicians must also possess the designation of clinical associate with evidence of substantial daily clinical experience relevant to paediatric dentistry.

Dr Khalifa Al Ansari, Vice Chairman Education and Program Director, Hamad Dental Center:

The framework for the postgraduate training is based on the Ireland/UK model of a two and three year training program leading to both the MFDRCSI (Member, Fellowship in Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) and FFDRCSI (Fellow, Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) qualifications.’

The Faculty of Dentistry and Medical Education at HMC under the direction of Dr Abdullatif Al Khal are committed to assisting clinicians, including the inaugural class of clinical associates, who are predominantly women, in preparation for the challenging examination by offering intensive monthly training courses through livestream sessions with RCSI.

Clinical associates who are not selected will not have to repeat the exam, and will be given the opportunity to participate in the interview vetting process the following year, competing with a new cohort of clinicians in vying for one of four coveted fellowship positions. The accredited fellowship will be awarded by the RCSI.

The internationally accredited RCSI HMC MFD Postgraduate Dental Education Program supports the guidelines of the new National Oral Health Strategy.
