Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) recently held a celebration at its Community Based Rehabilitation Compound in Muaither to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is sanctioned by the United Nations and aims to promote an understanding of people with a disability and encourage support for their dignity, rights and wellbeing. This year’s theme was ‘Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an Inclusive Society and Development for All’.
Dr Wafaa Al Yazeedi, Head of Medical Rehabilitation at HMC and the Medical Director of the Community-Based Rehabilitation Compound, said
the event aims at raising public awareness about the rights of people with a disability to remove obstacles that can impede their integration into society.’
Osama Abdul Hadi, Assistant Executive Director of Rumailah Hospital and Administrative Director of the Community Based Rehabilitation Compound, said the facility provides rehabilitation and healthcare services to 65 men with disabilities.
Patients, their families and community members participated in the event alongside Al Hiba Charity Team of Qatar Center for Voluntary Activities, Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar Academy Al Khor and Omama bint Hamza Primary Girls School. Also in attendance was the Croatian Ambassador to Qatar, Mr Tomislav Bosnjak, who said that observance of this day is important to raise public awareness that disability does not necessarily mean isolation or seclusion.
