Laundry Attendant at the InterContinental Doha The City, Hezron Jeremiah Onyango, was awarded runner up in the Unsung Hero category at the recent Hotelier Middle East Awards.
The honour was bestowed upon Hezron for his positive attitude, strong character and hardworking nature as well as for his incredible generosity.
Last year when Typhoon Haiyan devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, many of Hezron’s colleagues and their families were personally affected by catastrophe. In addition to donating to the IHG® Shelter in a Storm disaster relief programme, colleagues at InterContinental Doha The City band together to raise funds for their fellow teammates who were impacted by the storm. In an extraordinary act of kindness, Hezron quietly donated an entire month’s salary to the cause. Pascal Eggerstedt, General Manager at InterContinental Doha The City, said:
We are so proud of Hezron and this amazing and well-deserved achievement…Hezron is the epitome of an unsung hero as he is continually looking for ways to help people yet never calling attention to his good deeds. In fact, we would have never even known about his generous donation if the accounts team hadn’t alerted us.’
In addition to his incredible kindness, Hezron’s honesty and dedication to his work have made him a model colleague since joining the hotel two years ago. Executive Housekeeper Prabhat Shukla said:
Handling laundry is a very important aspect of the overall service we provide to our guests and I can always count on Hezron to get the job done…in addition, there are countless incidences in which Hezron has gone above and beyond the call of duty. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team.’
According to Hezron, it was his meager upbringing in Nairobi City, Kenya that inspires him to help others as he can empathise with those in need. A passionate football player, Hezron got his first taste of hospitality in 2011 when he joined Diani Reef Hotel in Mombasa before moving to Qatar in 2012 to join InterContinental Doha The City.
The Hotelier Middle East Awards reward the often-unrecognised individuals that make the region’s hotels some of the very best in the world. They give those back-of-house heroes that so often go unnoticed their chance to shine, and bask in the glory bestowed upon them by their peers. Now in its tenth year, the Hotelier Middle East Awards recognises a broad range of front and back of house roles, from laundry managers to chefs, marketing experts to concierges and spa professionals to engineers.
