ISL Qatar Students Reflect on Global Citizenship and Community Action
As the academic year nears completion, ISL Qatar students have taken time to reflect on their global citizenship and community action initiatives. Students have initiated and supported over twenty outreach projects, each offering several opportunities for students to expand their knowledge through positive action in the community.
Projects ranged from regular beach and Lusail’s Mourjan Marina clean-up, to distribution of over 12,000 lunches to construction workers, to cancer research fundraising, to support of animal shelters, to organisation of games at the family events of Winter Carnival and International Family Food Fair, to healthy living campaigns, to ‘green’ initiatives in recycling and tree-planting and most impressively the creation of a rooftop garden in the school.
The achievements however went much further than monetary figures as students’ proudest moments are reflected in the learning they achieved through their actions.
A Grade 7 student, said:
The construction worker lunch box initiative was a good experience to help other people. Sometimes they wanted more than one. At first I thought that they were selfish, but then I understood that because they had almost no money to buy extra food, they were simply hungry.’
A student council member, added:
We are proud that our school has contributed to the global community with the creation of the first school roof garden in Qatar. The garden’s a long term legacy for Qatar and the world. Gardens like this have the ability to cool the roof’s temperature helps our energy conservation. The plants reduce dust in the air and improve air quality.’
Community service or social projects are an important facet of education as students learn to manage real enterprises, and reflect on their ethical and global impact. The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme is a model for educating global citizens and fosters international awareness.
The International School of London Qatar was founded in 2008 and serves the needs of Doha’s international community. ISL Qatar has set new standards of academic excellence and is a leading IB ‘World’ School, authorised to offer the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes and is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. www.islqatar.org
