HE Alessandro Prunas, Ambassador of Italy to Qatar, recently delivered an address to Italian students of the International School of London Qatar (ISL Qatar) together with their families and Italian teacher Nicoletta Pillon.

The ambassador introduced the 20th edition of the ‘Week of the Italian Language in the World’, an annual celebration of the Italian language every third week of October.

According to HE Ambassador Prunas, he was glad to virtually meet the ISL Qatar students and their families and present this important initiative to promote the Italian language and culture in Qatar. He said he is very thankful that ISL Qatar accepted to join the celebrations by carrying out learning activities in connection with this year’s theme ‘Italian Between Word and Image: Graffiti, Illustrations, Comic Books’.

In a globalised world, it is crucial to give the opportunity to young people from different countries and cultures to continue to learn and speak their native language. Multi-cultural environments allow us to better support diversity and mutual understanding, which are key values of our communities.

He said that the Embassy of Italy in Qatar is eager to extend their cooperation to ISL Qatar for future forms of collaboration in the field of education.

Supporting mother tongue language literacy is central to the ISL Qatar mission. It goes beyond preserving cultural connections and providing a ‘soft landing’ for students. Research over the past three decades increasingly demonstrates that continuing mother tongue language and literacy alongside the development of a new language is in the learner’s best interest. It is important not only for subsequent language development, but also for overall personal and educational development.

Cultural and linguistic identities of ISL Qatar students are valued and nurtured through the school’s international curriculum and mother tongue language programmes. ISL Qatar currently offers 12 mother tongue language programmes which include Spanish, French, Arabic, Portugese, Greek, Swedish, Turkish, Japanese, Dutch, German, Russian and Italian.
