When Marhaba went on a ‘tasting’ fiesta for the new menu at the Salsa Restaurant in Doha Marriott Hotel, we were expecting colourful decorations and crowds of people that usually comes when an invite spells the word ‘fiesta’ out front. Indeed, we found sombreros, nachos, guacamole and even that infamous wrestler, Nacho Libre, watching from the walls.
The place was colourful and smelled Mexican. One can actually smell the colours off the walls, which, is not bad given the delicious vibe of the whole space. A plate of nachos and a bowl of guacamole were waiting for us at the table and virgin margaritas were passed around and served generously.
Mexican Chef Efrain Flores, who flew from Mexico City especially to introduce the new menu, did a small demonstration of how to make two staple Mexican dishes – guacamole and beef salpicon. Most guests were drooling over the guacamole which according to one Mexican food aficionado, tasted better than the other guacamole served in other Mexican joints in Doha. We kept our judgment until we had almost finished the nachos, and that we did. It did taste better! Tostados and nachos were fresh with just the right amount of saltiness. We couldn’t resist getting more.
What won us over though was the Short Rib with Mole Verde, a tender piece of beef resting on a really tasty green sauce followed by the Chocolate Chili Cake, served with ice cream on top. There was no obvious chili on the cake, except that after the sweetness, a spicy after-taste remains in the mouth. ¡Ay, caramba!
