Classic Bolognese Sauce

Easy Supper

Hello everyone,

This week I share a recipe for a Classic Bolognese Sauce, which is the basic savoury minced-meat recipe for any supper dish such as lasagne, stuffed cannelloni pasta and of course, the much-loved spaghetti bolognese. A hugely versatile recipe, and much enjoyed by many and one to definitely add to your culinary repertoire.

Serves 6 | Preparation time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 20-30 minutes | Stove Top or Oven 150ºC

Meat Sauce

  • 1 tbsp virgin olive oil
  • 1 kg lean beef mince
  • 2 cloves of garlic – skin removed, crushed
  • 2 onions – chopped
  • 250ml beef stock – or water
  • 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Pinch sea salt flakes
  • Handful chopped parsley – roughly chopped

1. Make meat sauce

Heat olive oil in a large casserole pan.

Add chopped onion and soften.

Add garlic.

Add minced beef, salt and black pepper and brown.

Add tin of tomatoes, stock and bay leaves.

2. Cook

Cover and simmer slowly on the stove top for a good 20-30 minutes or more, until thick.

3. Serve!

Take to the table in bowls with spaghetti and cheese on top or use in a minced beef lasagne, stuffed cannelloni or any favourite cooked pasta.

This recipe can also be cooked in the oven once all the ingredients are together. Place in an oven proof dish with a lid and bake for 30 minutes in a moderate oven – say 150ºC.

Minced lamb also works well.

This recipe makes a lovely, thick rich bolognese sauce. If the sauce becomes too thick add extra stock/water to create the consistency you want.
