Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation Kahramaa and Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) signed an extension agreement for the operation of the Ras Abu Fontas (BA) power plant.
The signing ceremony was held in Doha and extends the current 20-year contract by an additional seven years. This is a significant achievement for both sides as they cooperate to achieve the best utilisation of Qatar’s resources and also underline the strength of Kahramaa and QEWC as reliable suppliers and operators in the fields of electricity generation and water desalination.
The Ras Abu Fontas (BA) power plant is one of six plants that form the Ras Abu Fontas Complex, which was inaugurated in 2002.
Pursuant to the arrangement, QatarEnergy will continue to supply the natural gas required to operate the plant for the same period. Kahramaa will utilise the supplied electricity to meet the growing needs of Qatar and will have a higher level of flexibility in utilising the three gas turbines of the power plant.
According to the Minister of State for Energy Affairs HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the agreement reflects the strong cooperation between Kahramaa and QEWC and aims at the optimal utilisation of the country’s resources. He said that QatarEnergy will continue to supply natural gas to all power and water projects.
I would like to thank the management and staff of both Kahramaa and QEWC for their outstanding performance in securing Qatar’s requirements for water and electricity.
Kahramaa President HE Engineer Issa bin Hilal Al-Kuwari stressed that close coordination with QEWC and QatarEnergy is critical for securing the country’s energy and water needs that are essential for the economic growth and development of Qatar. Kahramaa is committed to providing electricity and water through advanced and sustainable infrastructure, keeping pace with the latest high-tech innovations in the sector and relying on scientific analysis of demand patterns and production rates.
QEWC Managing Director and General Manager Engineer Mohammed Nasser Al-Hajri said that their company dedicates significant resources to address and meet the country’s demand for electricity and water with high efficiency.
