The Kulluna for Health and Safety initiative has relaunched its successful health awareness campaign, Kulluna for a Healthy Heart, at the City Center-Doha and the campaign was also simultaneously opened on The Mall on D-ring road.

Introduced in April 2013 by Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Hamad International Training Center (HITC), and supported by its founding sponsor ConocoPhillips Qatar, the campaign aims to raise awareness of Qatar residents about cardiovascular disease, its prevention, available treatments and lifestyle changes that promote heart health.

HITC Director, Dr Khalid Abdulnoor Saifeldeen, said:

According to the World Heart Federation, cardiovascular diseases cause about 17.3 million deaths each year. Our campaign is designed to spread awareness of the importance of knowing your health status and to inform the public about how they can incorporate a healthier lifestyle. This year, we have re-launched the campaign on a larger scale, to cover various locations around Doha and we will be running it for longer. As in last year’s successful campaign, we will again be offering free health tests to visitors, along with general information for further guidance. This year will also showcase the care and commitment of HMC, management and staff, in providing such a compassionate and valuable service to the community. The Kulluna team will ensure that more people can further benefit from this year’s awareness campaign.’

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death worldwide. In Qatar, there has been an alarming increase in the number of admissions of heart attacks and heart failures in the past two years, with about 4,000 patients seen every year.

The ‘Kulluna  for a Healthy Heart’ campaign focuses on various preventative measures of cardiovascular diseases and highlights the behaviours, lifestyle and risk factors that can lead to heart-related illnesses such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Cardiovascular Consultant at Heart Hospital at HMC, Dr Omar Al Tamimi, said, ‘The Heart Hospital has facilitated a special division in the Emergency Department for critical cases that require immediate intervention.’ He pointed out latest technology of electronically wireless transmission of heart x-rays, ECG and vital signs to the cardiologist will enable on-the-spot accurate assessment of the patient’s condition upon arrival, and minimise the time a patient spends until proper medical care is provided. ‘This technology will reinforce a higher survival and recovery rate,’ he noted.

Dr Al Tamimi mentioned that the newly applied ER instructions to the teams, prioritising heart patients, will allow them reach the required department in the right time. In addition, he said refurbishment and expansion plans will take place soon to increase the number of beds. He noted that the increase in the number of patients has led to more well-equipped ambulances being commissioned, resulting in higher efficiency in the transfer of patients from their homes and the Heart Hospital or other HMC facilities.
