Two of Honda’s popular vehicles won two major awards in the second edition of the Golden Steering Wheel Awards (GSWA), organised by the country’s leader in automotive media – Arab Motors Middle East (AMME) and XTork magazine.

The Honda HR-V seized the Best Subcompact Crossover SUV Award, while the Honda Pilot received the Best 8-Seater Family SUV Award.

Faisal Sharif, Managing Director of Doha Marketing Services Company WLL (DOMASCO), the official sole Honda dealer and distributor in Qatar, said that the HR-V’s eye catching looks and impressive performance have been reflected in the great success it has achieved in the local market.

We are proud of the recognition it has received and we thank Arab Motors Middle East and XTork magazine for appreciating Honda’s most sophisticated subcompact SUV by putting it to the test and getting the most out of its capabilities.

The Honda Pilot, meanwhile, is the company’s flagship SUV and a definite head turner that can outperform the competition, according to Sharif.

We were certain that it would not fail to impress in the rigorous test drives, thanks to its impressive track record both in terms of performance, design and driving experience.

The Golden Steering Wheel Awards is an annual award bestowed upon the best SUVs and 4X4s on the Qatari market. The entries for 2020 consisted of several ranges and sizes from superior, luxury, mid-size; all the way to sports compact SUVs.

Nabil Al Hassan, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of AMME, Hassan Al Hassan Managing Director and co-founder of Xtork and Ousama Rahal, Executive Editor and Head of content development, selected 17 cars for this year’s edition of GSWA.

Participating cars went through rigorous test drives earlier this year – on 15 January – by AMME’s expert test drive unit. The test also included extreme trial of performance and efficiency in engine, suspension, and extreme test conditions and multiple surface performance demonstrations varying between rough, to sands, in addition to asphalt roads across different parts of Qatar. The nominees were announced on 20 February.

The New Honda HR-V

The new front-wheel drive HR-V is equipped with a spirited 140hp 1.8 i-VTEC petrol engine, which maximises economy and efficiency. The engine is mated to a seven-speed fully automatic CVT transmission. The car also offers Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control, and driver and passenger front airbags standard on all grades.

The car’s sportier exterior blends the beautiful lines of a coupé with the practical space and toughness of an SUV. Indeed, the HR-V boasts a youthful vibe while offering a smart, comfortable and spacious interior. The car features a 6.8-inch Display Audio with Touchscreen equipped with USB and HDMI ports that allows drivers to connect a smartphone and use its features such as playing their favourite music and using the phonebook to make calls to contacts. A multi-function steering wheel puts the audio and cruise controls at one’s fingertips, making it a driver-friendly interface.

The car’s centrally mounted fuel tank provides a huge boot and the novel second-row Magic Seats are further evidence of innovative design. The latter are cleverly designed to offer lots of useful ways to increase its carrying capacity. Also, with the new stay-spring mechanism for the hatch, it’s now easier than ever to access HR-V’s cargo space of 1,456 litres.

The HR-V also offers up to 100.1 cubic feet of passenger space with abundant rear seat head and legroom, especially considering HR-V’s compact outer dimensions.

The New Honda Pilot

The new Honda Pilot features advanced torque-vectoring system, called iTVM-4, on the all-wheel-drive models. This system allows the vehicle to vary the amount of power put down to each rear wheel as well as distribute power between the front and rear axles through an electronically controlled, hydraulic rear differential. The Pilot comes with a variety of terrain modes, and it is equipped with a 3.5-litre direct-injected V6 engine with an output of 280 HP and 355 Newton metres of torque combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

It is equipped with highly functional and easy to use digital features, such as the innovative 8-inch Display Audio with touch-screen and the latest generation Rear Entertainment System (RES) with 115-volt power outlet and an HDMI Interface.

The Pilot also offers more luggage and legroom, and the flexible passenger compartment and third-row seating gives the driver lots of seating options. A new feature in the all-new Pilot is the Hands-Free Access Power Tailgate, which allows the driver to load and unload cargo with the remote key fob in their pocket or handbag. The driver simply has to activate the sensor with their foot under a designated area of the rear bumper.
