The aptly named ‘Butchers Night’ at the New York Steakhouse is the literal meat lovers paradise in Doha. With five courses dedicated to superior cuts of your favourite meats this is the best night in town if you are serious about meat.

On the second floor of the Marriott Marquis City Center Doha, waits the New York Steakhouse. It is designed as a quintessential steakhouse should be – low lights, deep comfy armchairs and a warm, relaxing atmosphere. We were seated by the roof-to-floor windows, by the charming and attentive staff, where we could gaze out across West Bay. At night the view is rather special.
To begun our carnivorous culinary journey, we were served some light starters to satiate our appetites until our meats arrived. There was: a shaved vegetable salad with mixed greens, slivers of seasonal vegetables tossed in lemon oregano dressing, a fascinating tuna ceviche dowsed in leche de tigre (tiger milk), and a creamy Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, Caesar dressing, croutons, parmesan, and anchovies. This was such a refreshing way to start a meal, and more importantly it was light, as we knew we had five courses of meat ahead of us!
To start our assent to meat heaven, Canadian Chef James Warnica, wheeled over the first of five trolleys called the ‘Butchers Block’ and began to carve our first meat treat of the evening. The Omaha Tenderloin Wellington was my personal favourite of the entire evening. Golden, crispy puff pastry was wrapped delicately around a slab of beef tenderloin which was coated with a mushroom and foie gras duxelle. When drizzled with the mixed peppercorn sauce, this dish went from delicious to euphoric. This beef wellington was unreservedly the best I have ever tasted and if you try nothing else – this dish is a MUST HAVE!
It was impossible to imagine how such an incredible dish could be followed up, but when the next Butchers Block arrived with what may have been half a cow on it, we knew we didn’t have anything to worry about. This behemoth was a whole prime rib which had been slow roasted for 24 hours. And that certainly resonated when you felt the meat practically melt in your mouth. This was served with a Cafe de Paris béarnaise sauce and some deliciously creamy gruyere mashed potatoes.
After two huge doses of beef, the lamb was a surprise. A huge, steaming herb-crusted rack of lamb was carved up for us. The meat was tender and juicy, while the herbs were flavourful and aromatic. The lamb was served with a fragrant rosemary jus which was wonderful when dribbled over the succulent lamb and sautéed vegetables.
The next dish to arrive to our table was a mystery. It arrived at our table encased in a hard shell of salt. But when expertly cracked open, it revealed a whole fish buried inside. The fish was a Norwegian salmon – encrusted in salt – bust stuffed with lemon and herbs. The simple seasonings really allowed the flavour of the fresh salmon to shine through and tantalise our palates. Shortly afterwards, our final serving was a whole confit rougie duck served with sweet orange sauce and roasted baby potatoes.
After our meat-centric mains, we were happy to see the dessert trolley rolling our way. We could not have endured another course – we were so full! But each mouthful is so exquisite it’s impossible not to clear your plate. A sweet selection of the Chef’s signature desserts were poised on a tray for us – with rich, chocolate tarts and cakes, to nutty bites, and caramel mouthfuls. We were served a beautiful, velvety cheesecake as well with a tasty strawberry coulis.
This was certainly an unforgettable, meaty, all-you-can-eat experience!
