Of the three different trim levels offered by Volvo, I would choose the R-Design. Not the most expensive but it looks so cool, with those black and grey touches and aluminium effects.

The XC40 is the result of Volvo deciding to get into the compact SUV arena. Volvo is already admired and respected for its large XC90 which many school mums swear by, and the medium XC60 which also became a worldwide hit. This may be because it was the first car that automatically stopped when it was about to crash into something. Looking back, it seems a sensible, even intelligent, thing to do but at the time it was regarded as being revolutionary and unusual.

With the compact R-Design XC40, we have an SUV with a distinctive, youthful look which is still a true Volvo with most of the technology and the same driver-assist and safety systems of its larger siblings.

The XC40 is pleasant to drive, especially with its high driving position. Steering is light and the engine has ample power which responds quickly and smoothly to your input. It cruises quietly on the highway, the suspension is great and is clever enough to easily handle the times you go off-road.

The inside has the Nordic charm of the bigger Volvos but it has been modernised and even revolutionised. It is refreshingly bold but you still have the large user-friendly centre screen and driver display (plus LED headlights and unique alloys), and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Intelligent design is clear everywhere, such as the small touches like the hook for a handbag in front and the hooks for the shopping in back. In fact, the XC40 has the best storage solutions. End of story. Seats are terrific, like in all Volvos, rear leg and headroom are generous and there are plenty of ports for everyone to charge their devices.
