Thousands of people celebrated the second annual National Sport Day yesterday, as sporting events all across Qatar have demonstrated the importance of ‘Sport for All’.
The National Sport Day officially started with the VIP Walk at the Corniche, with the participation of high ranking officials, such as QOC Secretary General His Excellency Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Minister of Health His Excellency Abdulla Bin Khalid Al Qahtani, Minister of Justice His Excellency Hasan Bin Abdullah Al Ghanem, ExxonMobil President and General Manager Bart Cahir and famous Australian Olympic multi-medallist Ian Thorpe, among other distinguished personalities.
The National Sport Day was celebrated in different spots in Doha and all across Qatar, including Aspire, Katara, Corniche, Al Refaa, Museum of Islamic Art Park and all sports clubs facilities.
Another highlight of the day was the launch of the ‘Be Fit’ competition, which drew many people, men and women. Many participants will commit to a weight losing process, closely monitored by VLCC experts, further promoting the concept of a healthy lifestyle and being in the contest for the QR250,000 prize pot. The National Sport Day offers the perfect occasion for everyone to follow a healthy lifestyle, practice sport and learn about the benefits of an active lifestyle.
As the lights of day faded on the Corniche, a magnificent event concluded the first day at the QOC Sports Zone, with thousands of balloons lighting the sky up and offering a unique spectacle to thousands of people.
As the Sports Zone will remain open until 16 February, everyone will have the opportunity to participate and practice sports and learn more on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. You are all invited to visit the Sports Zone, and try the different sports there!
Thousands of visitors attended National Sport Day at Katara yesterday. The fun-packed day began bright and early, offering activities in cooperation with National Sports Federations including tennis, wrestling, and basketball.
Kick starting the activities, was a relaxing session of yoga on the beach followed by the ‘Fun Run,’ and basketball. The day concluded with the Sports Film Screening.
The day also featured a variety of sporting games including table tennis, golf, rowing, climbing, chess, boxing, as well as other activities offered by Ihssan, Enterprise Qatar, and Anti-Doping Lab Qatar.
Other attractions included handball, cycling, and weightlifting, a ‘Fun Run,’ yoga and fitness, beach soccer, beach volleyball and basketball. A number of sporting activities held at Katara were offered by companies such as Primary Health Care Corporation, Kahrama, Hamad Hospital, Enterprise Qatar, Qatar National Anti-Doping Commission, Qatar Insurance Company, Ihssan and Wellness Center.
Over 30,000 residents flocked to the Aspire Zone to take part in the National Sport Day, which kicked off with a 4 km fun-run around the zone. Over 700 individuals pre-registered, whilst a further 1,300 arrived to take part. More than 2,000 walked, jogged, and ran across the finish line outside Khalifa International Stadium.
Following last year’s ‘A Walk to Remember’ that saw over 10,000 people spend the day exploring the precinct, this year’s ‘A Journey to Remember’ aimed to give the public an insight into the world class venues at Aspire Zone. The walkathon ran from 12 pm to 5 pm. The route started at Khalifa International Stadium, wound through Aspire Dome, and finished at the outdoor pitches. Once participants finished the walkathon, they were presented with healthy food packs in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy diet.
Wrapping up the day’s events was ‘Light the Torch’. Participants pedaled over 30 stationary bikes stationed outside the Torch-Doha Hotel in a challenge to generate enough power to light the hotel’s outdoor lighting system. The cyclists were members of the Aspire Active program, and it took nearly 20 minutes to light the hotel.
One of the special programs included a workshop run by the Multi Skills Development Centre, which aimed to introduce children to basic motor control activities.
In addition, the Football Performance and Science Tournament lasted for five hours and attracted more than 500 school boys, while the Aspire Academy football tournament attracted over 600 student athletes and members of the public.
Qatar Foundation (QF)
To mark the second annual National Sport Day, QF for Education, Science and Community Development rejoiced by hosting family-friendly sports competitions and events for its staff, students, faculty and members of the public.
A variety of fun-filled contests were organised around the foundation’s five major locations, including running and cycling races, football matches, karate classes and golf lessons, amongst others.
Games and activities were also planned for children of all ages and for those with special needs. Additionally, a friendly cricket match was played between Msheireb Properties’ workers and QF staff, attracting a huge crowd of onlookers and cricket enthusiasts.
In addition to the competitions taking place across campus, the day was also educational for those on site. Many visited the Health and Wellness Campaign Fitbit Booth, for example, to receive tips and advice on how best to incorporate healthier diets and exercise into their daily lives.
Al Shaqab also offered a pure breed Arabian horse show, jumping demonstrations and horse rides to commemorate Qatar’s rich heritage in equine sporting activities.
Qatar Football Association (QFA)
In celebration of National Sport Day, Qatar Football Association (QFA) and Qatar Shell kicked off an attempt at the largest ever 5-a-side football match at Aspire Zone with Guinness World Records officials in attendance to oversee the record attempt, which drew hundreds of participants. The attempt was part of the QFA and Qatar Shell initiative KOORA TIME, a five-year sustainable initiative which is designed to improve the health and wellbeing of Qatar’s youth through football.
Ministry of Interior
The Ministry of Interior celebrated the second edition of National Sport Day with the theme ‘Towards Better Performance and a Beautiful Life’. The activities were organised by Qatar Police Sports Federation at Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar Sports Club where a huge number of people from different age groups were present. Around 1,000 persons participated in eight sports and recreational competitions held for adults and kids alike. The celebration started at 8 am with aerobics. In the rope pulling contest Police Training Institute (PTI) came in the first place while Coasts and Borders Security Team won the second place. Other items in the day included wrestling, body fitness, football, 1,000 m race and 100 m race. On the other hand, the Capital Security Department held various sports activities for inmates in the Department and it included football, tennis, volleyball and basket ball and rope pulling. The Permanent Committee for Abu Samra Border also organised various sports activities at residential city in the Border.
Dolphin Energy Doha Dash
Over 1,300 Qatari citizens and residents took part in the inaugural Dolphin Energy Doha Dash at Losail International Circuit. The Dolphin Energy Doha Dash, held in celebration of Qatar National Sport Day, saw runners following the tyre marks of Motor GP stars as they raced around the circuit. Participants competed in four categories including a 5km and 3km race, a 1km Mini Doha Dash and a 1 km ladies’ walk.
Hollie Jenkins, with a time of 21 minutes and 52 seconds, and Chamada Gadissa, with a time of 16 minutes and 38 seconds, were crowned champions of the 5 km race – a full lap around the International Circuit.
Dusty Spates and Jessica Singer took first place in the 3 km race and Rossin Browne and Mohammed Anas-Kv were victorious in the 1 km Mini Doha Dash.
The Dolphin Energy Doha Dash, organised by Professional Sports Group, was supported by a number of leading businesses in Doha including title sponsors Dolphin Energy, platinum sponsors Vodafone Qatar and supporting partners Fitness First, Kellogg’s, Rayyan Water and W Doha.
Dolphin Energy provided the opportunity to run against Qatar’s fastest man and event ambassador Samuel Francis as well as offering free health checks, while official fitness partner Fitness First held pre-race warm up sessions before every race and live demonstrations throughout the day.
In addition to promoting a healthy lifestyle, the Race Village at the event ensured an exciting day out for the entire family with a range of entertainment activities including special children’s WiiSport area in the Dolphin Energy pit-garages, and a relaxing chill-out area provided by Vodafone.
Visitors to the event also had the exclusive opportunity to have their picture taken and get an autograph from Team Qatar 100m sprinter Samuel Francis, and British Olympic silver medalist Samantha Murray.
Qatar’s Football Family (the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, the Qatar Football Association and the Qatar Stars League)
Oryx Rotana celebrated Qatar’s National Sport Day by organising a number of activities at the running track in Ras Abu Abboud and in the hotel’s Fitness Centre to mark the occasion. The program of events started in the early morning with a 5 km mini-marathon. This was followed by a the BREAK 500 competition in the hotel’s fitness centre where each participant needs to burn 500 calories in 30 minutes on the treadmill.
Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)
From a family fun day at Katara to tents offering free health checks at Aspire Zone, the Corniche and at Al-Rifa’a street of Al-Kharaityat, thousands of members of the public participated in events promoting healthy living organized by HMC as part of its commitment to Qatar National Sports Day 2013. All events highlighted the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle contributing to the growth and success of the nation, which is the main purpose of Qatar National Sports Day. Activities at Katara, organised as part of the Kulluna campaign to improve safety and health, included a basketball shoot-out, tug of war, relay race, hula hoop challenges, egg and spoon race, space hopper race and a sack race relay. Information about leading a healthy lifestyle including eating a balanced diet and other concerns was also provided to the thousands of people who attended the events at Katara. Meanwhile at the Corniche, Al-Kharaityat and ASPIRE Zone, more than 40 nurses and medical staff from HMC’s hospitals offered free health checks including blood pressure tests and weight measurement. Thousands of people took the chance to have their health checks taken by HMC’s experts.
Mawashi, the cutting-edge company for meat and livestock trading, wrapped up a series of friendly matches with Qatar Charity, Qatar Public Prosecution and Qatar Airways at the Markhiya Sports Club in celebration of the National Sport Day of the country. Friends and families teamed up to support the nationwide message for health and wellbeing and to show great team and sports spirit.
