Qatar Stars League (QSL) side Al Gharafa has welcomed former Al Khor coach Jean Fernandez as their new coach for the upcoming 2017/2018 season. Veteran coach Fernandez was introduced to the local media recently, along with officials from the Cheetahs.

Fernandez signed a three year contract with Gharafa following the conclusion of his two year deal with Al Khor, which ended earlier in the month. Speaking for the first time as Al Gharafa boss, Fernandez revealed his joy at signing for the Cheetahs.

Al Gharafa is one of the biggest sides in the QSL, and I know them well during my time with Al Khor, our aim is to get Gharafa to their rightful place in the standings.”

Fernandez also revealed that he will be giving young players a chance as coach of the Cheetahs.

I have been asked by the club president to give opportunities to younger players, and this will be a major priority for me.’

Fernandez, 62 is a vastly experienced coach, having managed a number of clubs in France including Marseille, Nancy and Montpellier. Al Gharafa is hoping to get a better place for their team with the help of the veteran tactician.

Meanwhile, Al Khor has moved quickly to replace coach Fernandez by signing Laurent Banide for their team. The 49-year-old coach was also formally introduced to the local media recently, prior to the signing of his contact with the Knights.

Banide is also not a stranger to working in the QSL, having previously enjoyed stints at Umm Salal and Al Kharaitiyat.  The French tactician has also coached a number of sides in the GCC. During the contract signing, Banide revealed his joy at returning to the QSL.

I’m glad to be joining Al Khor and I would like to thank the club officials who made this deal happen. I know the league and I am looking forward to helping Al Khor move away from the relegation zone.
