Since June 2022, newly registered vehicles in Qatar have number plates bearing the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM  logo.

All newly registered vehicles in Qatar have number plates bearing the official logo of the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, in addition to the special plates announced at the recent 11th Electronic Auction for Special Numbers.

The Ministry of Interior announced that the special numbers recently auctioned on Metrash2 would carry the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM logo. The public online auction sold 50 car plates through the Metrash2 app. As per rules, participants are required to make a security deposit of QAR5,000. Numbers with the football championship’s logo were installed only on newly registered vehicles since June 2022.

Lieutenant Faisal Abdulaziz Al Haydous, an officer at the Vehicles Number Plate Workshop, explained that the auction includes samples of the plates that were recently put up for electronic auction to sell special numbers, organised by the General Directorate of Traffic. The new plates will bear the logo of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM.

Special Plate Numbers Auction

The Ministry of Interior hosts annual special plate number auctions. Nationals, residents and companies can participate online in special plate number auctions or buy the plate directly, if it is offered for direct purchase. A variable fee, usually QAR100, commonly determined by the General Traffic Department, is applicable to issue a special number ownership certificate.

Those who have received the right to purchase an elite car number must pay for it within two days, otherwise they will be banned from purchasing it and receive a fine. The payment can be completed by cheque to the Finance Department at the Ministry of Interior or by credit card. The rules and conditions of HE Minister of Interior Decree No 6 of 2001 on special numbers are applicable to the auctions.

A person can own more than one number, yet the auction committee reserves the right to take back the auctioned number or exclude any participant that is violating the auction rules. If the bidder withdraws from payment, the security deposit will be forfeited. If a bidder wins more than one special number, none of them will be granted to him until he pays all the amounts for the special numbers he won.

The traffic police department sold 50 number plates with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM logo during the online auction, with the most expensive number selling for QAR1.8 mn (USD495,000). Special plate numbers auction for cars are very popular that could amount to USD55 mn.
