Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q) is continuing to help educate and improve the health of the local community, with a new programme of community webinars.

The new ‘Health and YOU’ programme has been launched by the college’s Institute for Population Health (IPH) and aims to create community awareness about health and diseases. The webinars presented by WCM-Q faculty and other experts cover a wide range of common issues that impact health and for which people can take charge, engage in self-care, and change behaviour to improve their wellbeing.

The series began last March with the webinar ‘Take Charge to Better Your Health’ by Dr Ravinder Mamtani, professor of population health sciences and medicine, and vice dean for student affairs-admissions, population health, and lifestyle medicine.

Subsequent webinars included ‘The Secrets of Longevity’ by Dr Sohaila Cheema, assistant dean for the Institute for Population Health, and ‘Things that Go Bump in the Night: Impact of Sleep on Health’ by Dr Shahrad Taheri, professor of medicine at WCM-Q.

Lifestyle-related diseases like obesity, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease are now the biggest cause of premature death in the world and IPH hopes to encourage Qatar’s community to take responsibility for their own health by taking regular exercise, eating a balanced diet high in fruits, vegetables, and wholegrains, and avoiding unhealthy habits like smoking cigarettes and shisha.

All the webinars are free and open to the general public. The latest, entitled ‘Just Keep Moving – It’s Easy and Healthy’, presented by Dr Sathyanarayanan Doraiswamy, instructor in population health sciences and assistant director at the Institute for Population Health, who discussed the role of exercise in promoting health and preventing disease.

All previous webinars can be viewed here.

According to WCM-Q, the ultimate objective of the series is to enhance self-care, reduce suffering, improve the quality of life, and increase longevity. Additionally, it will aid and support people in making informed decisions about their health and disease.
